50-A Minotaur Lane, Late Afternoon/Early Evening

With plenty of help from a very small Marie, Aziraphale and Wilson had spent the day playing with Marie and preparing for any other wee visitors who might stop by. Maybe fishies were telepathic...because one impish koi swam up to the surface of the pond and spat a small stream of water at the wee demon.

Bel sputtered. "HEY!" he said, conjuring up a wee fireball.

Luckily for the inhabitants of the pond, Aziraphale appeared on the scene just at that moment.

"Now, Mr Belthazor," he said, in an amused voice. "I don't think that's the most productive way to play with the fish."

The fishy in question swam in a small cirle and then waggled its tail as it dove back under the water, almost as if it were taunting Bel.

Holding back a chuckle, Aziraphale peered over into the pond, wondering what was getting into the wildlife.

"Hmm. Well, since you're quite a lot stronger than he is, let's just let him get away with it this time, shall we?" He gave the fish a stern look. "And no more teasing the guests," he admonished, feeling quite a bit less silly about talking to a fish than one might suppose.

"Raynor says I gotta finish fights or everyone will think I'm weak," Bel pouted.

"But...if you make the decision not to fight with someone who's already weaker than you, that isn't weak. That's merciful. And it's very important for you to be merciful if you're very strong," Aziraphale explained.

"Demons aren't s'posed to be merciful," Bel pointed out.

"Oh, that's not true at all!" Aziraphale insisted. "In fact, that's part of what makes some of them so clever. Because they can be merciful when they choose, but you never know whether they'll choose to or not. Because of them being demons, of course. And I know quite a few demons, you know."

Bel frowned a little, puzzled. "That's not what Raynor says," he said. "He says no mercy, ever."

Normally, Aziraphale would have balked at contridicting a parent figure, even one he knew was wrong. But in this case, he had enough emnity for Raynor that it was hard to rein it in.

"Well..." he said thoughtfully, "I think maybe Raynor is confused. We adults like to pretend that we know everything, but very often we don't really. And in this case, I do feel pretty safe in saying that maybe Raynor doesn't have that part of it right. It's good to be strong, especially so you can protect the people you love. But it's also very important to be good. And being merciful is part of being good."

Bel thought this over. "I want to be good," he said solemnly. "Raynor wants me to do bad things."

Hesitantly, Aziraphale replied, "I'm glad you want to be good. And it's important to do what the adults in your family say, but sometimes, if you know that what they're telling you to do is wrong, it's okay to be disobedient. So you listen to your heart, and do what it tells you is right."

He tapped Bel gently on the chest, and gave him an encouraging smile.

Bel nodded. "I will," he said. "I don't like doing the stuff Raynor tells me to do. And none of the other demons ever wanna play."

"Well now, see I think that the better class of demons definitely like to play," Aziraphale said, nodding. "So you just keep on as you have been, and not doing the things Raynor says that you don't like."

He quirked an eyebrow, and then gave Bel a little grin. "Unless it's eating your vegetables. James is very insistent that people do that, you know."
