Junno didn’t let go of him until they reached a porch to take shelter from the rain. Ueda frowned and fastened his jacket, coughing and taking a couple of steps away from him. Junno sighed and rubbed his eyes, locks of hair dripping wet on his face.
“Sorry”, he whispered after he noticed that Ueda was put out.
In the following seconds of silence Ueda looked at him out of the corner of his eye, watching how he pursed his lips, his eyes glowing with determination looking somewhere distant. He’d normally lower his head after he’d apologized, then show a little smile and blink his eyes. It never worked, but he did it every time. But because he wasn’t even trying to fake a smile, which he also did very often, Ueda knew that he didn’t really mean he was sorry.
“Have you planned anything after this?” he asked, leaning forward and turning his head to look at Junno.
He burst out laughing.
“Anything at all.” he said. “I just couldn’t stand there doing nothing”.
God, he was acting as childish as usual, Ueda thought. Did he think, as a matter of fact, that dragging him out of Ryo’s apartment would make any change? They had been together for many years. It wasn’t going to be that easy to split them apart. Besides, Ryo knew Junno was no rival for him. He was probably watching TV now, waiting for Junno to end with his little act.
Junno should already know. He should’ve listened to him and leave it when he read his note. It was a loss since the beginning. Ueda didn’t want to be in the middle of that worthless fight anymore.
“Well, if it’s like that I’m off” he sighed, and then he turned around.
“Wait!”
Ueda’s foot stopped halfway before stepping in a puddle. The rain soaked the low part of his jeans. Junno’s long arms were around his shoulders. Though he wasn’t holding him as tight as he grabbed his wrist before, Ueda could feel his desperation. His jaw clenched and dropped on Ueda’s head as if he wanted to say anything but couldn’t. What could he say? That he wanted Ueda to reject his boyfriend to be with him? That he understood him better than anyone else? That he could, therefore, make him happier? Lies.
Despite Ryo’s being rude to him, despite his treating him like a possession more than a boyfriend, dragging him along almost everywhere he went to and controlling every progress in their relationship, he loved him. He really did. He thought that Ryo didn’t need to be better with him. He loved him too, in his own way. Ueda might have cried many times because he hurt him -yet he believed he did that unconsciously. And, anyway, the good times always beat the bad ones.
Junno’s chest rose and fell against Ueda’s back. His heart was beating fast. The raindrops made a metallic sound when they hit the roof of the porch. Ueda grabbed Junno’s forearm and took his arms off him.
“What for?!” he asked, with his back to Junno.
Junno walked in front of him and tried to kiss him, but Ueda turned his face away and Junno’s lips touched his cheekbone. Ueda glared at him, then pushed him aside and took the way to his house. He had some things to pack.
“Where are you going now?” Junno screamed. His voice sounded sort of stifled. “You’re gonna get soaked!”
Ueda snorted. It didn’t matter, anyway. He was already soaked from head to toe.
STOP! Would Ueda choose a love from
yesterday or for
tomorrow?
2.2 - Yesterday
It was pathetic from the beginning. How that guy, in front of that many people, ran towards them. All the people in the departure lounge turned their heads to see what was happening. Ueda first thought of running away and wait for Ryo anywhere else, but they were blocking his way. Ryo had left his bag on the ground and began pushing him when he tried to reach Ueda.
“Ueda! Ueda!” he wasn’t screaming, but his tone was high enough for everybody to keep their attention on him. “Let me speak to him, Nishikido!” Ryo grinned and pushed him again. Junno just charged at him. “Ueda…” Ueda looked at him, his arms folded. “You-you haven’t given a proper answer to me yet!”
“Hey!” Ryo grumped in a deep voice. “Ueda’s with me, didn’t you know that?”
“Ueda, just tell me to leave you alone, and I will! I swear to you I will! But tell me!”
Pathetic. Just pathetic.
“Taguchi, you’re making me mad!” Ryo hissed, holding his rage. “You aren’t anything for Ueda! Get the hell out of here!”
Junno clenched his fists and gave him a fierce look. Ryo glared at him, then turned to face Ueda and tilted his head towards the boarding gate. Ueda nodded and followed him, without even looking back at Junno. They picked up their bags and headed towards the stand where a flight attendant was checking people’s names.
Without further ado, Junno’s fist landed on Ryo’s face. He turned round and raised his hand to punch Junno back, but Ueda’s hand held him back. They both looked at him.
“Let’s go” he said. “You promised me you’d forget everything. Just… don’t make a spectacle. We’re going to miss our flight”.
Ryo took the tickets out of his pocket and gave them to Ueda. He handed them to one of the hostesses.
“If you want an answer”, he whispered to Junno, “you already know how I feel from the beginning.” Junno stared at the ground, trying to get ready for what he was going to hear. “I’m s…“ Ueda looked at Junno’s sad face, and then to Ryo, who was telling him to hurry up. “Thank you”.
All Ueda wished, wondering if Junno was looking at the plane taking off from the airport, was to not having hurt him so much. He knew he’d overcome it fast, yet he never wanted everything to end up like that. He was sorry for his warning hadn’t been enough to stop him.
Ryo wouldn’t stop complaining while Ueda cleaned the tiny wound Junno made on his lower lip, yet Ueda could tell that he felt relieved. He couldn’t help grinning from ear to ear, after all.
“I’m sorry” he suddenly said. Ueda frowned. “I know I always act in a selfish way” Ueda shook his head and opened his mouth, ready to speak. Ryo put a finger on his lips and moistened his. “I’m only like that with you. You know I love you, right?”
Ueda leaned forward and placed a kiss on his bruised lip.
The sky was bright and blue now.

2.2 - Tomorrow
Ueda avoided meeting his eyes and looked through the window. Their plane was already there.
“Taguchi, you’re annoying the hell out of me!” Ryo hissed, holding his rage. He spoke in a lower voice. “Look, he doesn’t have any feelings for you. Can’t you understand that? He’s fine with me. He doesn’t need any idiot to fuck him around! We’ve been together for a long time so far, and we plan to stay like this. He doesn’t need anyone to brainwash him, got it?”
What? Since when did Ueda leave Ryo decide his feelings for him? For a moment, he felt something was wrong. It was the first time he felt like a doll, without his own free will. There were suddenly butterflies in his stomach. He imagined himself in front of a huge abyss. He gulped. His hand slipped down the strap of his bag.
Junno was panting, his fists clenched -ready to fight. Ueda walked towards Ryo and put his hand on his shoulder. Ryo turned his head back.
“Let’s go” Ueda sighed. “Don’t bother about him, he’ll get over it. Don’t you remember what I told you?” he tried to smile. “He has just a crush on me”.
Junno frowned when he heard that, though he didn’t try to stop them when Ueda put his arm around Ryo’s shoulders and walked with him towards the boarding gate. Junno sat down and let his head drop.
Ueda gestured Ryo to go ahead and give the flight attendant his ticket. Ryo steadily walked through the corridor. When he reached the door of the plane, he suddenly noticed Ueda wasn’t with him. He ran all the way back, the hostess telling him to come back, and saw Ueda waving at him at the other side. He held the ticket on his other hand, ripped in two pieces. The flight attendant, after checking the passengers list and crossing out the ones that were missing, got inside and closed the gate.
Junno immediately stood up when he saw Ueda alone coming back from the gate. He couldn’t hide the surprise on his face.
“Wha-Where’s Nishikido?” he babbled.
“He needs to think through some things” he said, sitting beside him. “And I should do that as well”.
Ryo’s plane was taking off. Ueda gazed at the sky through the glass. Junno fell silent.
The sky was clear and blue now.
“So you think I only have a crush on you” he complained after a while. “I think I said I love you”.
“You did” Ueda nodded. “But Ryo’d gone mad if I’d told him”.
“Um, okay”
“”Um, okay”? What do you mean by that?” Ueda raised his eyebrows.
Junno laughed.
“Well, it means that I’m glad you reconsidered choosing me” he smirked. “And I can still wait some time for your answer, and if you-”
“Who said that? Besides, you just added that” Ueda laughed. “That whole sentence can’t fit in “Um, okay””
“We were both ready to kill each other” Junno said in that tone he only used to talk about video games.
“I know. Ryo was hot, but you looked pathetic.”
“Hey!”
Ueda leaned back on the chair and sighed. After all, he was glad he’d sensed the problem in time. And it had been thanks to Junno. He wasn’t going to split up with Ryo, but he needed some time to relax and think for himself. And at least he had a good friend to count on.
“What’s the problem? Do you still want to go to Hawaii?” Junno asked, his face suddenly invading Ueda’s field of vision.
“My suitcases were on the plane” Ueda told him. “Do you mind if I drop by your apartment tonight, until I get my stuff back?”
