So, finally, I am reading Twilight... yes, I know I'm about 2 years too late in terms of fandom, but I finally folded. I *HAD* to see what all the goddamn fuss was all about
( Read more... )
Yes, she's a Mary-Sue. I won't answer the super powers part (I haven't spoiled you, don't worry :D), but her lack of moodstone eyes and platinum locks is made up for by the fact that her description is also that of Stephenie Meyer. To a T. Seriously, go look up the author. :D
I found the novels excruciating reading, honestly. I only finished them because I have this thing where I go nuts if I don't finish books I start. But I'll admit to liking the movie. It smoothed out a lot of the problems I had with Twilight, I think Kristen Stewart is somehow, bizarrely, ridiculously hot (I KNOW, I DON'T KNOW, OKAY? RPattz is also a stunner but he HAS to wash his hair, I'm sorry), and the way Edward was played gave me unstoppable joy. So, book no, movie yes.
Bella is a horrible person. There's no argument. :D
Oh wow. I remember reading that now - that the author had created a heroine In Her Own Image! Oh, the horror. Almost finished the book, and a friend is lending me the DVD - looking forward to seeing the movie interpretation because to me, there's a lot of stuff in there that would be awkward or completely cheesy to do onscreen!
As for Bella, reserving judgement until I've read a few more of the books I think :)
Also, I clearly now need some kind of Twilight icon. Just for appearances sake :D
Book Four reveals her Mary Sue-ness in all her glory.
I read the books because up until the last, I couldn't put it down. But looking back on it, I really don't know why I did, because Edward and Bella, the two main characters, are teerrrrible. Plus all the sparkly adjectives.
Wow - I have more MS-ness to look forward to?? yays! or perhaps not. Is it horrific and painful?
What I don't get is why grown women (ie. not just tweenagers) are into this series. It's about teenage romance essentially - not really something adults can relate to easily. Is it just filling the void that Harry Potter has left behind in the literary world?
Oh, dude. I don't even know what a Mary-Sue is...but Bella is one of what yo described for SURE. Meh to the books. I liked 'em ok when I was stressing through exam season last year for a little mid-breakdown levity- but the midnight sun partial draft was what dragged me in in the first place. Far superior tween-reading.
