Geisha readings...

Amy and I are both currently reading "Memoirs of a Geisha" by Aurthur Golden. We're going to go out for coffee when we're both done reading it to talk about it, and then see the movie together. Last night I read over 100 pages, which is rare for me to do in one sitting, not because I don't like reading but just because I get easily distracted. I'm ( Read more... )

I thought Memoirs was pretty good, but Iwasaki's book was better--less sensationalized and more true-to-life, and with a way better handle on Japanese psychology, obviously. The fact that she calls them "geiko" like a J and he calls them "geisha" like a foreigner sums it up, really. Golden's book definitely made a better movie that hers would have, though.

Uh, that is, should make for a better movie--I haven't seen it.

It really seemed cliche to me that Sayuri felt like her life had changed SO much and she was instantly so much more experienced and saw the world totally differently, purely from loosing her virginity. I was thinking, "Oh please, only an immature girl who wasn't ready to have sex when she lost her virginity would feel that way." And then I remembered, that was exactly who she was. But a part of me still felt annoyed the author portrayed her feelings that way, because I wondered if he just assumed it was the way most females felt...and I don't think it is. Not being a woman himself, it's not like he could really know.

Wow someone I know who's already read them both! I'm glad you say the other book is better. Gives me something to look forward to reading. But is it less dramatic or interesting in some way? Is that why you think it wouldn't make as good a movie?

p.s. I wasn't meaning to suggest that having sex for the first time with a man you weren't attracted to, because he had basically paid for you, wouldn't be life altering. It would.

i found that the second half of the book just wasn't as good as the first. i read it years ago so i couldn't tell you whether i thought the writing was worse, or whether it *was* happier... but i remembered that i felt very let down by it.

Would you be willing to model for me for pics, for the purpose of drawing/painting and so forth? Nudes are great, but if you're not up for it (I doubt that anyone would be), it's no problem. I just want to take pics of lots of poses. I do adore the look of partial nudity with draped fabric though :)

Yeah okay, as long as you promis to send me the pics over icq afterward. :) Totally nude I'm too modest for...maybe I'll change in a few years, but right now the most I'm comfortable with is skin tight clothing...or at bare minimum MAYBE bra and underwear and whatever fabric you wanted to use. :p

Okay sorry I haven't called yet, I've been really busy! But I bought the book for Ali Penner and she is reading it now too and wants to go to the movie with us.

At University Heights the showings are at 6:30 and 9:45, I think. I can go to either of those showings on Sunday. Or on Monday or Tuesday I could go to the 9:45 showing. I also might be able to make it to the 9:45 showing tomorrow night, but there is no way Ali will be done reading it by then.

I hope you don't mind that she is doing it with us now. She seemed interested when she found out I was going with you, and I'm pretty sure she's who I met you through many years ago. Must have been one of her b-day parties or something.

I would still like to go out for coffee first and discuss the book too. We could go to the Starbucks on Shelbourne across from Fujiya, if we see a later showing...or if you can make it to the 6:30pm showing on Sunday we could go to the coffee shop beside Safeway at the mall. I've never been there but I'm pretty sure there's a cafe there.
