Quick layer mask tutorial

I'm not sure this is the way to do it - but it IS the one and only way I know, thaught to me in school. I've used it, for example, for the icon I'm using now.

We have one nice pic of Lily Evangeline and and a wonderful picture of ( Read more... )

Forgot to switch the black & white. Definitely an indication to go to bed, though it will be ignored. :)

Very nice tutorial!

Just a quick question: why use a quick layer mask, rather than a normal layer mask? Once you delete something with a quick layer mask, it's gone for good, isn't it?

I use the quick layer mask so that it's fast. Also, you CAN save the selection and add and delete with the selection tools. They're there for something, no?

What I mean is that, if you delete the background of your picture, deselect the selection, carry on with whatever you want to do, and then suddenly think "Actually, it would've looked better if I'd left that bit in", then there's not much you can do.

I always prefer normal layer masks because they seem less final, but... er... that might be because I'm a bit of a wimp. All boils down to personal preference, I s'pose!

Sorry to bother you! :)

Well, you can play it smart, open the original copy of the pic you are working on, select the part you're missing, (save selection on beforehand), paste it into the document, merge those two layers, load that selection and you're kind of ready to fly again. That's how I do it.

Great tutorial I must admit i don't usually go to all that trouble. I usually just open up the image in a sepeate window and use the eraser tool to get rid of anything I don't want. Then resize and copy and paste to another picture. As in this

Well, with the eraser tool, it's hit and miss, really, or so I've found. I prefer to stick to quick layer masks.
