That's one of the weird things about collecting old photos, particularly the very old ones like that first one. People do look odd, like they're unhinged or something. I think it's maybe to do with the limited photographic techniques available, the type of film and the fact that photography was relatively new still. You're right though, she does look possessed!
I have some lovely Edwardian portraits that I may or may not end up using for my Independent Study. If I don't use them, I'd be happy to send them to you. :)
I absolutely adore old photographs. Please take me to this shop one day.
I could drive myself slightly mad by wondering about the people in these photographs. What were they called? Where did they live? What did they do for a living? I'd never know... yet I could have a great deal of fun simply imagining what their lives were like.
I love the photos! You could quite easily make up little stories about the people in them. It would be great to know who they were and what they did.
The first picture is incredibly striking. I do find that people's eyes can be quite haunting, though. Perhaps it's because the child on the right didn't really understand what was happening? I guess we'll never know.
Wouldn't it be fascinating? Those people are our history. Quite amazing.
I agree, the first picture is very striking and my complete favourite as it's so domestic and I think a little older than some of the others but in remarkable quality.
