it all depends on whether you think mental health can be life threatening. I know first hand it can. And the smallest thing can make the biggest difference. I'll swear my puppy saved my life, it's not a certainty but I know that without his love and affection I would've been pushed to the brink more times than I already was, and maybe when I was on the edge of life and I wondered what I had to live for maybe he wouldn't have been there and I would've died. I really don't know.
Yes, this is just an excerpt from a book I'm reading. I agree with some of it, other parts not so much, but I found it to be humorous. I know QUITE a few people who run around saying things like that :)
I agree with what you said about animals though. They really can be so loving and therapeutic. I have three dogs and they make me happier every day!
I do like how the spin he puts on it. Yes, it definitely depends upon whether the mental illness is life-threatening. Most likely, there is a small percentage of people who say "Punk rock saved my life" who were seriously suicidal, not just "sad, depressed, and lonely so I'm gonna put the knife on the table and sit here contemplating all night." And, that small percentage is probably telling the truth. Music is powerful and it could be that punk rock was exactly what they needed.
But yeah, most of the time people just say that because they were sad/depressed/lonely/etc. and they found others who appear to be the same in punk rock. It's a brother/sisterhood. I guess. Whatever.
