I love long distance relationships. I mean, I would prefer to be closer since you can't cuddle an IM convo, but it's through those convos and emails and such that you really get to know the other person.
I have been in LDRs. The longest one was with me in MN, USA and him in New Zealand. We spent two years apart in which time I spent 5 months in NZ, so it wasn't too horrible. I moved to NZ for good last year. Best ending to a story ever, we are engaged and getting married end of this year!
I just got out of a long distance relationship. Usually, before my ex, I didn't like the appeal, but I didn't even give it much thought when it came to him. So, we were approximately 9 hrs away- from Southern Quebec to the Toronto area. During the six months we were dating, we never saw each other because we both had school and we were broke. I was planning a trip, but we broke up before I could go to see him.
Long distance relationships only work if the both of you work hard and really want it. There has to be some form of contact, and you have to work out problems as they come along or before they can happen. I found that I felt emotionally distanced from him, and it made the break up much easier- but because I kept contact with him through MSN, I stopped going online.
i have a long distance relationship with my lover [i am married/open] and it's probably a very good thing that he lives in England whilst i am in America ... otherwise things could get very messy, i fear.
for us the distance is superfluous except for the lack of physical contact. we met virtually and we remain close and open virtually [in all aspects ;o) ] this whole issue is very new for both of us, neither of us was looking for it and we both still have our commitments to our primary families ... the distance makes this all possible. we've seen each other three times now in the past 8-9 months. not bad. and the time we spend together is sweet and deeply involved, which is nice as well.
honestly, i believe that it is very difficult to be in a long distance relationship. there is no physical contact which is an important part of relationships, whether it be just a hug, cuddling, holding hands or even something sexual. i've never been in one, and i really don't think i would ever last in one. not that i would cheat, i just couldn't last.
I think LDRs are normal and can be a part of a normal relationship- but it's not for everyone.
My ex and I were going to do a LDR when I went off to college, and I would have been cool with it- but she's not the type of person who could handle a LDR. I mean, even more than a year and a half before I was gonna go, she was freaking out on me saying that she was afraid that I was going to cheat on her while at college and find someone new. Some pansexual she is LOL
