This used to perplex me a lot until I paid very careful attention and realized that my cell phone makes a slight sound, almost closer to a vibration, just before it rings and that I was so tuned in to this piece of electronics that that pre-call sound would jolt me to attention. It's the same with some alarm clocks that make a very faint click before setting off so people wind up waking up just before their alarm because they've been conditioned to equate their alarm with waking and that click with their alarm.

I've had two more of these experiences since this post.

In one of them, I took my cell phone off my belt to check the time, and as it was in my hand, it started ringing.

In the other, I was hanging out with Don / Jack, and he was basically talking to his invisible Halo friends and not me. I retorted, telling him that I was on a bluetooth wireless headset and wasn't actually even talking to him, I was talking to my invisible cell phone friends. As I finished the sentence, my cell phone rang from the other room.
