Why do we want what we can't have? What makes the forbidden so appealing? Whether it's a love interest, sex, a car you will never have enough money to buy, illegal drugs, a fruit in the first garden....every wants things they can't have. And, I'm not sure why ( Read more... )

i think it goes back (if you know of or believe the Bible) to Adam and Eve eating the forbidden fruit, definitely. they made it or rather God made it human nature to want things we cant have or are in some ways bad for us. its in our system, we cant do anything but try and avoid the things we want that have bad consequences. its is a thinker though. but one answer is, it has been in our nature to want, rather than need. i guess survival doesnt mean anything to us since we're going to die anyways, b/c you can see some people who cant afford food weekly but have cell phones or have cars that may cost more than their annual rent. so i'm guessing the "live for today, life's too short" mentality causes us to want what we really cant have and live life through pleasures received from the the forbidden things.
