I Am Not Public Property

Oh, god, that shower sounds awful. I still remember this strange lack of boundaries from when I was pregnant with Jac.

One time, when I was about eight months along, I was sitting on a couch at a dinner party, and this guy actually came over and pressed his ear to my stomach. It was shocking. People are clueless.

I'm sorry all those bridal shower folks were so rude.

That ear-to-belly moment sounds horrifying. I'm guessing you probably didn't stab him in the head as he deserved. What gets me is that people would never do these kinds of things to someone who wasn't pregnant, so I'm not sure why they think it's ok when your belly rests in your lap.

I did have a rather entertaining conversation with a clueless young friend of the bride. She asked how far along I was, so I said 8 months. She said "oh, so it's any day now!" "Noooo, pregnancy lasts 9 months." "Well, it could be any day now." "Uh, no. I still have 5 weeks to go. If the baby was born now, she'd be premature and rushed to intensive care." Then she gave me this superior 'I'm not going to argue this with you although I know I'm right' look and walked away. I had to laugh. The clueless experts just climb out of the woodwork around now!

Sadly, this is how a lot of people act around pregnant women. It's like you lose all right to personal space as soon as you start to show (or even before that sometimes, when you first make the announcement).
