Everywhere I'd possibly want to work in Salem is less than a mile from my prospective apartment. It's only gonna suck in winter...snow..horrible snow

You know, I don't believe interviewers can technically ask you if you have a car. They're just allowed to ask if you have reliable transportation (which can - and often does- include public transport). If an interviewer asks "Do you have a car?", it's perfectly fine for you to answer with "I have reliable transportation." It's none of their business what that transportation is. Just a thought. I'll keep my fingers crossed for you that something wonderful turns up.
