Have you looked through the LJ supplied layouts? They really aren't too bad anymore. It's harder than it used to be to customize them imo (in reference, I had my first LJ account as 'talulagirl' in 1999-2000 and customized it to mess and mess), but it's not impossible. My journal is pretty simple and based from an existing layout, and I'm pretty happy with it.

layout-lounge has some good layouts and they have tips/tricks etc as well.

The one I'm using right now is edited from one of minty_peach's codes. :) She not only provides you with codes, but has a handy guide in case you want to edit the codes.
