I heard this news on the radio just as I was composing today's happy post. It made me sad. Unfortunately, on a later news bulletin the headline went, 'Paul Newman who has died after a 60 year career' as though it were the career which had killed him.
An original - did things his own way. I always liked what he said about his wife, Joanne Woodward - "Why chase after hamburger when you have steak at home?"
In "Point to Point Navigation - A Memoir" by Gore Vidal, which came out a couple of years ago, Vidal had a few anecdotes about Newman - they had been close friends for many years. Said he was one of the most unpretentious people he'd ever met, and cared nothing about the sex appeal image that the press tried to put on him - just a "total guy."
He seems to have been perfect in every way. A long and happy marriage, a great acting career, all his charity work, and of course his looks, his charm, his down-to-earth-ness, and his wonderful sense of humour. What's not to love?
Yes it's very sad that he's gone. At the age of 6 or so I claimed that I was going to marry him, but in my defence, I did have a playmate from down the road who happened to share his name.
