Still re-reading the fifth book - about a third of the way through, at the start of Chapter Fifteen, The Hogwarts High Inquisitor.  Have accumulated a few thoughts....

Yes, Sirius was a bastard at times.

...Okay, most of the time.

...Okay, the whole book. But he was a pitiable bastard, which is important. To me, anyhow. ::nods::

*shakes head* It was a long time after the fifth book came out that I began to feel sorry for him at all. Wasn't until I realized how tragic he was - brilliant, young, and so damn sexy as a teenager - it was really the description of him in the testing hall in the fifth book that did it for me.
