Hahaha!! Awesome post. I'm married to a gringo too and sometimes he just doesn't get my excitement over things... Like when I discovered a churro man and his carreta down the street
oh man, churros! yeah it's hard when your gabacho is all like wtf. i'm trying to teach mine and he's a pretty quick learner. he already knows the wisdom that is the taco de lengua. i hope you will share your stories on the community too!!!
OH MY GOD I NEED TO GO FIND THAT in the winter abuelita was my special special treat because it would just take so long! i remember being really really little and spending hours trying to cut the chocolate myself so i could have some, mmm. also, what's chido? i've never heard it.
i know, right! and cos you're little your mom won't let you use the sharp knives and you're trying to saw away at a piece of Abuelita chocolate with a fucking butter knife, hating life and your weak, 6 year old arms! gives new meaning to "break me off a piece, Abuelita!" i found this at the Pavilions on Melrose and Vine in Hollywood.
and chido is slang from the 80's that was used to mean cool or awesome. it sounds like Cheeto but with a d.
Indeed, it has been quite a while that a great personal post has been made here.
I personally like the bricks of chocolate. I like taking my time and smashing it down and waiting for the warmth to come up while dipping my pinky finger in there for a taste, until I can't take it any more.
You know what else I miss with chocolate? A warm bolillo bread just dunked in there all sloppy. Those are my best memories with my dad's gramma. She would always have a small pot of chocolate sitting around with a cake stand filled with breads still in the grocery store bag.
Also, nice to see that I'm not the only "old" lady here. I still have VHS tapes in a box somewheres and I still use them too.
we called bolillos birotes, it's how i've always known them. what we used to do also is cut them in half and stick them in the oven and melt a little butter on top. then when you bring them out sprinkle some azucar y canela and dunk those in the abuelita! and also the conchas de pan dulce. i always liked the cochinitos best and i described the flavor to my husband as being very similar to gingerbread. i haven't had a good cochinito in a while and i have to go out to east LA to get them.
hehe, yeah my asian friends call me "viejita." i just took a load of vhs tapes to the Goodwill cos we moved and i wouldn't have a place to keep them in our new place. i kept a few though, like an Elvis Costello tape and that Duran Duran movie "Arena."
and i'm all about the personal posts! my own lj reads the same way, i don't blog in the common sense of the word, rather i write vignettes about my life and own experience.
