Well, I like the light textures by ashke_icons, especially this set.
And these light texture/brushes by any_otherday.
rainharbour has some nice brushes, and a couple sets by awmpdotnet are pretty cool.

About your third question...I really like morguefile for pics that are okay to icon...Wikimedia Commons has some useable stuff too, but it's not as nicely organized--to me at least. ;P Technically, what most professional image sites (that sell photos) mean by royalty-free is that you only have to buy the image once--you don't have to pay the photographer/company each time you use it. Some people might argue that since you don't make money off icons, it's not commercial use...*shrugs* I don't know.

And, thank you for your answers for my third question. :) I had looked at getty, if I remember rightly, and they had all these different terms and it was getting me all confused. :p I know that there are some people who make stock icons who watch our journal so I thought I would ask. I looked through morguefile and found some interesting stuff, but wasn't feeling up to saving anything at the moment. ;)
