The Letter E: YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG!

Sep 17, 2009 19:07

Two things that bug the everlivin' CRAP out of me:

  • Unless you're using it as an adjective (the premier episode), the word premiere is spelled with an E at the end. The meaning of premier when used as a noun is

    1. the head of the cabinet in France or Italy or certain other countries; first minister; prime minister.
    2. a chief officer.

I know, right? I wish more people would throw grammar tantrums on my flist. Sometimes you learn something, sometimes you wish others would learn something, but there's never a bad time for grammar!

Yeah, I was delighted that they managed to untangle the mess that was the finale so well and so succinctly. I'm suddenly very much looking forward to the rest of the season.

Amen on the two spelling issues. AMEN. (Although we have a prime minister. But the heads of the provinces and territories are premiers.)

I can't help it, I love it when people burst into song for no reason. It's the Grease-loving seven-year-old in me.

Ditto! I felt like the episode was really choppy and I want to sit down the writers to talk about flow and pacing. Yet I still love the show. I just want it to be great aside from the awesome singing.

Ah, but according to the definition, a prime minister can be called a premier. I actually see that quite a lot, especially in newspaper headlines (trying to shave off a few letters so the font can be bigger?).

Yeah, they're moving the plot a bit weirdly, not focusing on the long term, introducing and solving issues in just one episode. That's gotta change if this show is going to work as well as I think it could.

True, by definition he can be; it's just in my experience our prime minister never is. To avoid confusion we make the distinction between premiers and the prime minister. Not that this has anything to do with the spelling of the word! I just find word usage really interesting, because I am a geek.

My biggest grammar pet peeve is the misuse of apostrophes. Many people would say, "bro's before ho's," which drives me dippy.

I agree that the lightning quick resolutions are not working. It rang totally false was well that Will was abandoning the club so quickly in the season. This show has so much potential and I really want them to meet it.

Wordy McWord on the two pet peeves. Also, it's definitely, not "definately". I see that one constantly. And people who pronouce "nuclear" with an extra U -- "nucular". GAH.

Agreed on last night's Glee -- didn't really do it for me. I think it's because they're moving through things too fast. The Kurt/Mercedes thing was awesome, but rushed. And the Acafellas would have been a more effective monkey wrench if it had happened later in the season, IMO. Pacing, people!

I thought FlashForward didn't premiere until next week?

I just checked my language: grammar tag, and sure enough - I'd done definitely. What I didn't remember, however, was that I'd already done the premier/premiere thing. Oy! Won't people just learn that one already!

They seem to want to make the episodes self-contained - at any price, even when the storylines suffer because of it. I think it's smart to make the episodes more self-contained at the start of a show, but not at the expense of the quality.

There must be some sneak preview of FlashForward online (only viewable to Americans no doubt), because there's a very crappy webrip available.

Gordon Gordon did say towards the end of last season that either Booth or Bones was in love already and just couldn't reconcile it - people speculated that it was Bones but maybe it was meant to be Booth?

Yeah, I remember that, and I also remember thinking that it was ludicrous to think that it was Bones. In my opinion, Bones might take some time to mull over the intellectual complications of being in love with her partner, but never in a million years do I think she'd keep it a secret after coming to terms with it. I always assumed it was Booth, myself.

Of course, that's just my interpretation of the characters.
