From what i've learned so far, there really isn't going to be a great lens that does everything unless you are willing to spend over 1,000.00 bucks.

I find my kit lens, a 18-55mm VR lens (f/3.5-5.5) to be very useful. It does a good job being a versatile, out and shooting lens. I also bought a 50mm f/1.8 lens as a prime lens so i could play with some stuff. That was just a bit over 100. I even found a $30 super-wide angle/fisheye lens online. I'd like to play with that.

I guess you could go out and buy a better (ie faster and more expensive) 18-70mm lens. That should cover you with a decent amount of zoom. But if you are expecting to replace a 18-55mm and 70-300mm lens with a single item, then you'd be spending alot of money.

This is all from a recent entry in the field. Hopefully you can get some very seasoned advice as well.

I have a Canon EF-S 17-85 f4-5.6 which works well for everyday snapshot and more serious stuff. But anyone with an SLR will soon find out that to give yourself lots of coverage you'll either be toting around a few lenses or spending a lot on wide-range glass. Canon recently came out with an 18-200 f3.5-5.6 EF-S lens that is just under 700 bux street. That will give you decent coverage as far as focal length ( ... )

My favorite?
A portrait (aka prime) lens is awesome in low light.

The f1.8 is reasonable but be warned, it's not a "wide" lens. It's like having a zoomed in locked view, but the portraits it makes are dreamy

I use it for everything. If I was on a desert island and needed one, this would be it.

Otherwise, I also have the 18-55 and it's okay and somewhat versatile.
