DVD Special Features

Dec 13, 2006 10:42

I was going to just make this an all out random post (in the spirit of brain spewing to which I aspire) about receiving my quarterly/holiday edition "package" from Jeff (j_mac179) and delighting in rewatching "Superman Returns" (since I loved it so much the first time around). The real news wasn't enjoying the movie again though, that was expected, what I ( Read more... )

I *LOVE* the special features on DVDs! I could sit and watch that stuff for hours.

Totally! I feel more a part of the process that way. Kinda like reading the book before the movie type of thing. They are hella fun when they are good and when they aren't - it just sucks. I know I get very disappointed when I go to the features and there are like 2 things *yawn* it like automatically marks the whole experience down for me.

EXACTLY!!!!

I want lots of things in the special features! I want to know how they did things and WHY they did things and what the actors thought/did during scenes and how the special effects guy got that gross thing to look gross by using dirt and pudding. *G* Okay that's just me rambling, but you know what I mean!

IMO, the 'special features' options on DVDs are the primary reasons why VHS is going (or has gone) the way of the Dodo. In the earliest days of DVD, back in the late 90's, even the most basic features - a commentary track, a few deleted scenes - hell, even just the theatrical trailer included with the film - all made the "digital experience" something totally engaging, as much more investment/analysis into the film could be done by the viewer.

So, yeah. Films and TV shows on DVD that go above and beyond the basics - to include a more in-depth, behind-the-scenes take on a product that a fan cares enough about to buy in the first place - are always wonderful things, and commending/highlighting those that standout for the time and effort taken in those features is a cool notion.

And yes, I need to be slapped, because I've yet to watch the Superman Returns bonus disc. I'm a baaaad Superman-geek. Too much other shit on my plate as of late, but I'll get to it this weekend, hopefully - especially after your glowing take on the material ( ... )

*mouth=floor*

WHAT?

*rereads*

Again, I say WHAT!?!

Is the world still on it's axis? It's not often that you surprise me, but dammit if you just didn't knock me for a huge loop. Are you well?

Frak! Now I'm all concerned for you. That's it. Momma says (for about the 100th time since I've know you - but this time with her Momma voice) - Jeff, you have way too many TV/entertainment commitments when you haven't even watched the features disk on a frakkin' Superman DVD. A movie you went to the theater and saw, what was it, 23 times?!? It's gorram Superman dude!

*concerned*

I think someone hacked into Jeff's account and started to use his LJ. That's the only plausible explanation.

This post makes me want to look through the special features on my DVDs... Donnnie Darko, Firefly, and Serenity - the only ones I own. Sigh. How do you shut this fucking thing off?

I would say the same Leg, but totally reread those first 2 paragraphs of his post. Totally Jeff's brand of geeky right there. Awww, poor Leg. But as I remember - you are kinda selective on what hardware you add to your collection since you are the master pirate/minimalist. Jeff, maybe we should help our Canadian brother out! *smoochies*
