Do they start with the same letter in Russian or have similar sounds? That's all I can think of.

Well, according to Yahoo! BabelFish, the starting-with-the-same-letter-in-Russian thing is out:

boot = ботинок
train = поезд
whale = кит
penguin = пингвин
piano = рояль

To me, they are all common things to find where it is cold:
Arctic Whales
Antarctic penguins
snow boots
piano playing in the mall at Christmas time
and traveling on a snowy mountain top by train

...but then, I'm weird like that and that was the first thing that sprang into my mind.
