there was an article in the national post recently about how the montreal jazz festival has become less about jazz and more about t-shirts and spectacle. apparently a new festival has sprouted in a backlash called the OFF Jazz Festival (or something) which supposedly brings the (jazz) music back to smaller clubs and whatnots.
what are you doing reading the national post?_agentcooperJuly 11 2005, 13:43:20 UTC
yeah, i didn't check any of it out. the venues were pretty scattered. nationalistic quebecois bars and whatnot. separatists eat babies you know. actually, i wanted to go hear joel miller play at that festival but i forgotted. wasn't aware that it was a backlash festival though.
so i was at the medicine hat jazz festival, and we were eating our free meal at the courtesy room after our absolutely fuckin' stellar! show, and i spot this guy across the table. his nametag says bob. i recognized him from saskatoon, and in particular from the week i spent in the sjs big band in 1997. so i strike up a conversation with this dude, and sure enough, his name is bob reid and he USED to run the saskatoon jazz fest. he got fired though, for reasons he wouldn't talk about. he has a huge chip on his shoulder. he seemed to feel that the saskatoon's jazz festival would be much better if he were still in charge.
he was telling me about nikka costa and how great she is, and i was like "yeah, I bought that album" but i didn't tell him that i hated that album and subsequently traded it back to recordland towards a really expensive minnie riperton record, which is awesome, by the way. in hindsight, i should've told him to sell his nikka costa and get some real music, like minnie riperton.
i don't know minnie riperton. yeah, bob reid was the guy that was bringing in big name acts like wynton marsalis and pat metheny. i think he may have been using some of his own money to fund some of that shit. i think the board felt uncomfortable with that. don' t quote me on that though. i might be a bit mixed up.
I saw Little Stevie Scharfstein play in some crappy big band on the free stage when I was there, and the swing dance couple was still going strong. Do you remember them? They look like they are having absolutely no fun at all. And the lady has super 80's hair cut in a diagonal line. It was awesome. They still have all the same moves, and no new ones. Awesome.

I'm going to Saskatoon tomorrow. Perhaps then the sun will shine, if I have luck.
