Chapter 1-Sighting
My brain made my body rise earlier than I wanted to. The brilliant light of the sun coming through a crack in the curtains lit my room. I could tell by its buttery yellow color that it was early afternoon. Though I wished that I could go back to sleep, I knew It was impossible. So I climbed out of bed, grabbing a pair of jeans from the nearest pile and a t-shirt from Element. I took a quick hot shower, knowing I’d slept too long already.
Jess’s next concert wasn’t until 5, so until then I’d have his full attention on the road. I toweled off and ran a hand through my messy curls. I got dressed, and headed downstairs grabbing the keys and my laptop. Sometimes leaving the house helped me think better, and besides it was a nice day. I chose to take the Hummer today just in case I had to pick anything up. I drove into downtown West Chester and parked in front of the internet café. I chose the table near the window, and pulled my cell phone out dialing Jess’s cell number.

We talked for about an hour or two and he gave me a lot to do, so I was basically out all day. When I finished my shopping I decided to refill my beer supply, stopping at the nearest bar.
As any other bar it was dimly lit and smoky. There weren’t that many people inside; a few sat towards the back, some conversing among themselves and some staring blankly at the T.V. The majority was sitting at the bar though, mostly old men hovering over their beers-except one. I grabbed a stool at the end of the bar, and glanced at the man who had caught my eye. This time however, I got a better look at his features. He was very skinny, fragile almost with girly curves. He looked up for a moment when the bartender approached him, and I saw his face. He had very distinctive cheekbones and a pale complexion. My examination was interrupted when the bartender’s voice broke into my thoughts
“What will it be?” He asked in a gruff voice
“A Budweiser, please”
He crossed the bar and opened a fridge, as I heard a sight pop of a bottle opener as he sat a beer in front of me.
“A dollar fifty”
I pulled out my wallet and handed him 2 dollars
“Keep the change” I added returning my gaze to the pale man.
The thing that held my attention was his eyes. They were green, not as normal as other people’s eyes. His were darker, deeper, like staring into an emerald. His face was lined with his shoulder length brown hair. He wore a black button-up shirt that hung nicely to his small frame. Two of the top buttons were undone- exposing his pale neck and his chest. His sleeves were rolled up to his forearm exposing numerous tattoos. On his left arm he had a small heart over his wrist. On his right arm he had an intricate sleeve tattoo. He had a few small tattoos on his hands but I was too far to read them.
Like me, he was drinking a Budweiser. He had his eyes up now; his eyes were intense as if he were watching something far away. He was beautiful, and I’ve never seen anyone like him before. There was something about him that attracted me to him like metal to a magnet. I was attracted to him, and that shocked me, for 2 reasons. First, he was a guy and I wasn’t gay. Second, no one in the bar noticed him. They sat there like he didn’t exist suddenly something broke his trance and he looked directly at me. I was hypnotized by the green of his eyes. Swimming in them, loving their beautiful color....
Instantly, he stood and he was walking towards me. He had a very graceful walk- especially for someone leaving a bar. With every step he took towards me, I was
Thinking about how beautiful he was. He caught me staring at him and he held my eyes to his. I couldn’t think coherently, and I hope I wasn’t doing anything embarrassing like drooling.
A grin flashed across his face, and it was a beautiful smile. Right now he was a few feet from me and I felt this almost electric charge between us. He never said a word and before I knew it he was gone. I stood quickly and almost fell. I ran out the door into the chilly night after him. I looked both ways and I didn’t see him anywhere. There was no one walking on the sidewalks, it was late. Then I looked at the cars parked along the curb and they were all the same as when I entered the bar. So he didn’t drive away. At least not that fast. He must’ve caught a cab.
I felt my shoulders slump as I shuffled to the Hummer and got in. I turned the key in the ignition, and drove home slowly deep in thought. I pulled into the driveway, and as the house came into view, I noticed lights on inside. As I parked the hummer, I was curious who was here. I hoped it was one of the guys, coming to hang out. But, the purple PT Cruiser parked in front of the house answered my thoughts. I sat in the Hummer for a few minutes thinking of a way to tell Ape that Jess was getting married. I took a deep breath as I twisted the doorknob and went inside. The living room was empty and I heard running water coming from downstairs. She must be doing the dishes. Normal Ape, always cleaning. I rolled my eyes as I descended the stairs into the pirate bar. She turned around just as I reached the kitchen.
“Oh Bam, I didn’t hear you come in.” She smiled turning to shut of the water.
“Hey Ape. What brings you here?” I returned her smile. It was nice to have some company.
“I brought you some dinner, home-made lasagna. I know you need a real meal, Hun. You can’t live on fast food and take-out forever. It’s not good for you.” Again, normal Ape.
“Yum.” I’m pretty sure she’s right. All I have to say is thank god for a mom with good cooking skills. I could already smell the garlic, and cheese and tomato floating from the oven.
“Thanks Ape.” I went to the fridge and grabbed a Mountain Dew. I took a seat at the island.
“Hey, Ape?” I asked looking up from my bottle.
“Yeah?” she asked taking the seat across from me.
“Jess called last night”
“Really? How is he?”
“Good. He’s fine. He gave me some good news though” I paused, watching her expression.
“He asked me to be his best man. He’s getting married Ape”
“When! Where! To who!” She jumped out of her seat
“Slow down and let me explain.” She sat back down and put her elbows on the counter, eager for the details.
“It’s January 10th. We don’t know where yet. He asked me to plan everything for him. Remember the girl he brought home for Christmas last year?” She nodded, shock plain on her face.
“He wanted me to tell you.” She nodded again
“Wow… You’re his best man?”
“Yep.” I shrugged. I don’t really know what to say.
“Can I help do some of the planning? I love to do this kind of stuff. I’m so excited!”
“Sure Ape. Uh, I’m no expert or anything but I think the lasagna is done.”
“Oh! I forgot about it!” She jumped from her stool hurrying to the oven and pulling out the lasagna. She went to the cabinet and pulled out 2 plates. She cut me a big piece and a small one for herself. We ate in silence, both of us consumed in our own thoughts. Ape left shortly after we ate, eager to go home and tell Phil. I threw our dishes into the dishwasher and headed upstairs to bed, suddenly feeling really tired. Tonight I actually took the effort to put pajama pants on, before crawling into bed. Before I fell asleep my thoughts wandered back to the man in the bar. As the blackness of sleep consumed me, I knew something. I knew tonight would be different. Tonight I wouldn’t float into a dreamless, black sleep. Tonight I’d dream of him.
