Cat lay on her bed, thinking, attempting to stay awake. She flipped her phone open and noted the time.
11:45 pm.
Migè was due in fifteen minutes.

The house was deathly quiet. She could hear her sister, Henrietta, breathing deeply. She had shared this tiny room with her younger sister ever since Henrietta had been born ten years ago.
Staring up at the ceiling, Cat sighed. She was going to miss her sister.
I have to get out of here, though. I can’t live with dad. Migè has offered me a save haven. I have to leave, even if it means leaving Hen, even if it means leaving mom, even if means leaving Electra.
Electra was the neighbour’s cat that had adopted Cat as her own.

Cat sighed again and rolled over to watch her sister sleeping. Henrietta had a fear of the dark, so a cute, little fairy-shaped nightlight illuminated the wall next to her head. Unlike Cat in appearance, Henrietta had blonde hair and blue eyes, having inherited all the recessive genes from her father’s side of the family.
She looked so peaceful when asleep.
Cat didn’t want to shatter that, so she sat up and crossed the room to the window. She eased it open and calculated the drop. Five feet or so.
Thank God for one-storey houses.
Nodding, she went back to her bed and extracted, from under it, the huge suitcase she had packed the instant she had come home from school that day.
She gathered that, her school bag and her parasol and lugged them to the window.
Heavy things first.
She used the extended handle on the suitcase to lower it to the grass below the window.
Next went her school bag, which she just dropped carelessly.
She lowered her parasol onto her suitcase gently.

“Where are you going, Cat?” Henrietta’s voice startled her and Cat spun around.
“I’m leaving,” Cat said shortly.
Henrietta clambered out of bed and crossed the room to where Cat was standing. “Why are you leaving, sissy?”
Cat smiled sadly at the endearment. “I can’t live with dad anymore, Hen…”
“So, you’re running away?” Henrietta looked as if she was about to cry.
Cat nodded. ‘I’m sorry, Hen… I just can’t take it anymore…”
Henrietta looked up at her, blue eyes bright and shining. “Where are you going?”
Cat sighed. “Somewhere safe.”
“Take me with you…”
Cat shook her head. “I would if I could, but I can’t…”
“Don’t you love me?” Henrietta whispered, a tear slipping down her cheek. “And what about mama?”
Cat used the pads of her thumbs to wipe away Henrietta’s tears. “Of course I love you, Hen, you’re the only sister I have… But I can’t live with dad; you’ve seen what he does to me. And as for mama… well, do you promise to look after her? Promise me you won’t cry.”
Henrietta nodded and sniffled. “I love you, sissy.”
Cat hugged her sister tightly and fought back tears as Henrietta embraced back.
Last time I’ll get to hug you, sis.
The embrace broke and Cat clambered out the window. Turning to look at her sister one last time, she waved.
“I love you too, Hen,” Cat called softly.
With that, she turned, picked up her things and went down the garden path. Once by the front fence that was obscured by high hedge plants, she sat down and began to sob for her sister.
Her phone vibrated in her pants pocket. She drew it out and read the message.
It was from Migè.
Cat.
We’re in the clr.
Mom said u culd stay wit us.
She luvs u lyk a daughter…
B dere in a min, sweetheart.
Xx
Migè
Smiling through her tears, she closed her phone and waited.

The minutes ticked by slowly.

A car crunched to a halt in front of her. Migè got out and smiled.
Cat wiped her tears away and smiled back.
“Since when could you drive?” She asked, loading her things into the back seat of the car and climbing in after them.
Migè got back into the front passenger’s seat of the car before replying.
“I can’t. But mom can.”
