Chapter 5
(starts in Jess's p.o.v)
He slowly opened his eyes, but only for a brief second as they quickly snapped closed at the sudden light seeping into them. Fighting back tears from the stinging in his eyes, he was finally able to blink them a couple of times before they adjusted to the lighting. Trying to get himself situated on the uncomfortable bed, he stopped when extra weight on his left arm stopped him. As a reflex, he glanced over to his left and noticed a cast around his wrist. “What the fuck?” he mumbled the question aloud as he tried to remember what happened. Then the first thing popped into his mind, Bam. Then small bits and pieces instantly hit him. Another car. The sound of glass breaking. Hitting his head on the window.
Shooting into a sitting position, he quickly tried to get out of the bed but a hand on his arm stopped him. “Don’t do that.” a stern voice demanded softly, causing him to stop all actions.
Since the voice came from the right side of the bed, he turned his head in that direction. The voice had come from the heavier set man, the same man who was his father. “How is he?” he questioned quickly.
Phil hesitated for a second as he thought of a response to the question. “Could be better.” he answered softly as he watched his son’s reaction. It touched him to see that his oldest son was more concerned about his other son, then wanting to know about his own condition.
“Could be better?” Jess asked, mocking his father’s question. “What the hell does that mean?” he questioned quickly, wanting answers.
Phil was taken back a little at his son’s outburst. Jess was never one to have outbursts like this, he was always the kind and quiet one. “Well the doctors said he’ll recover from all his physical damage.” Phil explained carefully, not wanting to get to the worse part of Bam’s condition.
Jess sighed softly, he knew his father was hiding something from him. “What do you mean physical? Is something else wrong?” he asked calmly, trying to get as much out of his father as he could.
Phil hesitated again. He knew that Jess could sense something else was wrong. “The, um, blow Bam took,” he paused as he tried to form the right words. Since he was attempting to do so, Jess only remained quiet. “He took to the head…um, it caused him to into a coma.” Phil finally finished as he removed his eyes from his son and looked down at his hands instead.
Shock completely engulfed him. His brother, in a coma? It just couldn’t be true. “It’s all my fault.” he whispered out loud before he could stop himself, but as he thought about the words again he only knew it was true. He was the one that did this to his brother.
Anger quickly reached Phil at his son’s words. “Don’t you dare say that!” he demanded in a roar, causing Jess to jump at it. “I don’t ever want to hear those words leave your mouth again, you hear me!” Phil demanded as he looked up at his son. “This is not your fault. No one out there in that waiting room is blaming you. I’m not blaming you, so neither should you.” he added, his voice getting softer as he tried to convince his son.
“I’m sorry.” Jess whispered as he removed his gaze from his father and to the cast on his left wrist. Silence then fell between the two of them. Neither knowing what to say. “Since you’re with me, who’s with him?” Jess softly questioned, still refusing to remove his gaze from the cast.
“Huh? Oh, Ville.” Phil answered quietly.
“Ville!?” Jess asked shockingly as he looked at his father. “I thought his was in Finland.”
Phil nodded his head at Jess’s words. “He was, but Dunn called him and hours later he showed up.” Phil explained as he adjusted himself in the chair he was sitting in. “He’s really a smooth talker to the nurses though.” he stated with a soft laugh.
Jess couldn’t help by let out a small laugh of his own. “Why is that?”
“Well the doctor’s weren’t letting us see Bam, they wanted to do more tests, but once Ape explained to the boy what condition Bam was in, he convinced one of the nurses to let us see him.” Phil explained as a small smile played on his lips as he remembered the scene that had taken place at the time. “So he let everyone see him first, and then he has been in there since.” he added as Jess nodded his head in understanding. Silence soon fell again between the two.
“So what did cause the accident?” Jess questioned softly, wanting to know what really happened.
At his son’s words, Phil tried to remember what they were told by the police hours ago. “The driver of the other car had blown a stop sign. He was doing anything and everything except for paying attention to the roads in front of him. Cops said they found alcohol and drugs in the car, as well as in the guys system.” he stated softly, explaining as best as he could the story to his son. After explaining the story, he reached forward and grabbed Jess’s right hand. “Enough of this. I’m going to get your mother. She’s having a wreck out there, with both of her son’s unconscious, but you’re awake now.” Phil said with a soft smile on his lips as he climbed out of his chair. Jess only nodded his head as he watched him. Once out of the chair, Phil leaned over and placed a kiss on Jess’s forward. “I’ll see you later.” he added before letting go of Jess’s hand.
He then turned around and started to make his way out of the room. Stopping at the door, he glanced back at his son to see that he was staring at his hands again. Sighing sadly, he began to step into the hallway. It killed him to know that both of his son’s were hurting and that he couldn’t really do anything. All he could do was comfort one, and watch over the other.
