As Fate Wills

Chapter 1

Sparkling sunbeams shone through the huge windows at Castle Bam, reflected by the metal heartagram on the opposite wall. It was supposedly one of the last few nice autumn sunsets that year, before winter would move into the West Chester area. Bam was staring outside. The conditions would be perfect to go out skating, but he didn’t. Nobody else did, either, though that was comprehensibly since he had told them all to leave the house earlier that day. He glanced at his custom made halfpipe in the backyard, changing his expression to a bitter and sullen one.
“This is bullshit!”, he suddenly yelled, accompanied by a hard hit on the counter next to him which caused a loud bang in the distressing silence of the house.

“Bam are you alright?”, Jenn shouted in worry. She made her way down the stairs, but swiftly stopped when she saw that her fiancée was apparently fine. She didn’t want to get on his nerves or bother him, since although she was “allowed” to stay at the house, he had told her to please leave him alone for a while.
“Bam?”, she repeated, “Is everything alright?”

“Oh yeah, sure! Everything’s alright!”, he spat, turning around so he could face her, “Except the fact that I still cannot move my legs!!”

Jenn stared back at him. She could see him fighting back tears, and immediately felt like crying herself again. She felt so goddamn helpless, and couldn’t think of anything that might somehow console Bam. There was nothing much to say. He had been in hospital for weeks, and still the results of all the tests that had been done weren’t evaluated.
If there even was one, the chance that Bam might ever regain total control of his lower extremities was tiny. Almost everything he loved, his purpose of life, now seemed inaccessible. It was understandable that Bam felt bitter, miserable, angry and whatnot at the same time. Jenn sighed sadly.

In the meantime, Bam had rolled his wheelchair back into its former position so he wouldn’t have to cope with Jenn’s expressions no longer. It felt too bad to see everybody feel sorry for him.
Slowly, Jenn went on walking until she stood behind her boyfriend, to hug him tightly and to express that of course he was still being loved. She felt like this was basically all she could do just then. Bam let her go on for a few seconds, looking at their reflection in the window, then closed his eyes and carefully unfolded her grip from around his neck.
“Jenn … I guess I’m ok … you can … could just leave me alone again?”, he said with a crumbling voice. Jenn stepped back and looked down to the wooden floor.
“Well, if that’s what you want me to do … if that’s what you think is the best for you now …”, she replied in a low voice.
“I do.”

Bam could see Jenn nod in the window’s reflection, then heard her steps fade away. He was alone again, left to his thoughts & feelings.

Chapter 2

It had all happened about 3 weeks ago, when Bam was filming random stunts and pranks with his crew for the new season of Viva la Bam, his MTV show. They had a street downhill closed down so they could do their stunts there, uninterrupted. Bam had invited Kerry Getz, another Philadelphia based Pro Skater over to join the filming. The two of them plus Novak had been skating there for about an hour already, when they decided it was time to try the latest stunt Bam had come up with, connecting several skateboards and then towing them down a hill with the three skaters standing on them.
It worked out fine for TV purposes, since one by one got lost on the way.
Novak was first; he lost his balance and fell to the side, rolling down the asphalt and then just lying there laughing his ass of. Kerry and Bam almost made it down the whole hill, so Kerry attempted to give Bam a high five. After all, this caused him to fall too, the only difference being that Kerry landed on his feet and just kept running behind the skateboards towed by Glomb’s truck.
Bam laughed and flipped him off teasingly, knowing that he was going to make it all the way down the hill now. There, Glomb would slow down and he’d be the one who conquered the challenge. Perfect for MTV.

All of a sudden he heard the screeching sound of car breaks and people screaming and shrieking in horror. He turned around to see what was going on, but before he could make out anything he felt himself being hit hard, probably by a car that approached from the side street. He was knocked down to the ground with his head brutally smacked on the asphalt, causing him to lose consciousness. The last thing he reminded were pains worse than everything he had ever felt before, seeming as if they were going to rip his body into pieces.
