Just watched the trailer for Star Trek Beyond. New life rule: as long as I consider these movies as belonging to an "action heroes in space" franchise that just happens to share its name with my much-beloved "nerds in space" franchise (isn't that a weird coincidence?), I'm a much happier person ( Read more... )

Star Trek 3 looks really fun and exciting. I don't know anything about the show canon though.

Probably the best way to enjoy the movie! The movies aren't cinematic masterpieces by any means, but I think the main reason why I disliked them is that their spirit is so very different from that of the shows; characters share names and some characteristics, but others have changed a lot, and that's kind of jarring if you grew up with them.

After Into Darkness, I have zero interest in seeing anything further in this reboot. I was, in fact, angered enough by it that it retroactively ruined the enjoyment I had derived from the first movie. Additionally,  J.J. Abrams has burned whatever credit he had with me, such that I don't want to see the new Star Wars.

I just can't sit through another one of these things. Part of me feels happier having given up on these franchises. The rest of me is just tired of it all.
