Prequel/Part One

Nick pushed some gel through his hair and winked at himself in the mirror before moving quickly into the bedroom. He stepped into the closet and pulled out the shirt he’d bought earlier in the day just for this occasion. It was white dress shirt with small, subtle stripes that matched the dark color in his dirty wash jeans.

He stood there for several seconds after he tucked the shirt in holding his arms out as he scanned the room wondering what he had forgotten to do in preparation for the date. He glanced down at his watch to check the time and noticed what he was missing.

“Ma boots!” He exclaimed as he stepped toward the closet and grabbed his black leather cowboy boots. He sat down and managed to put them just as he heard his doorbell rang.

Excitement and nervousness flooded his body and he struggled to convince his legs to move. He opened the door smiling brightly with a million butterflies fluttering in his stomach.

“Hey Nicky, you look great.” Nick blushed as Warrick stepped inside the door offering him a long stemmed, red rose.

“Thanks Warrick, you look great too.” Nick accepted the rose, “Let me put this in some water.” He turned to head into the kitchen and took some deep breaths as he filled a vase. Warrick was wearing black jeans with a dark brown, large collared dress shirt and a black leather jacket. Nick couldn’t remember the last time he’d seen Warrick all dressed up. He was looking at him in a completely different way now and he had to admit, there was a deeper attraction there than he’d ever realized.

“There’s this really nice restaurant about an hour out of town I thought you’d like. Best steaks I’ve ever had. I know how much you like steak.” Warrick raised his voice so Nick could hear him in the kitchen.

“Sounds great…I’m starvin’.” Nick smiled as he came out of the kitchen holding the vase. He sat it on the coffee table and turned back to Warrick. “You wanna have a seat?” He didn’t know what else to say or do. He was never this nervous for a first date, but this was Warrick…his best friend and co-worker. He was beside himself.

Warrick smiled as he shook his head, “We’d better get going. Our reservation is at 9.”

“Ok.” Nick walked passed him to grab his jacket and Warrick reached out taking his arm and turning him back to face him. He could see that Nick was a nervous wreck and he wanted to try and break the tension so they could both enjoy their time together.

“Nicky…” He whispered pulling Nick’s lips to his own. The kiss was simplistic and so soft. Warrick grazed Nick’s cheek lightly with the back of his hand as he pulled away.

The pleased smile and longing sigh that escaped Nick’s lips was enough encouragement for Warrick to kiss him again. Nick opened his mouth slightly inviting Warrick’s tongue inside and he obliged. Warrick moaned softly and pecked at Nick’s lips intermittently as they stood catching their breath.

“We…we better get going.” He ran his hand down Nick’s arm slowly and reached back to grab Nick’s jacket, “We’ll miss our reservation.” He held the jacket up as Nick nodded and slipped his arms inside it.

Nick grinned as he caught his breath and nodded turning out the lights while Warrick waited for him at the door and they left.

Warrick was a perfect gentleman and opened Nick’s car door for him almost causing Nick to blush yet again. Even though the kiss had wiped away a great deal of the nervousness, it was still a bit…intimidating. Warrick was so relaxed and Nick still felt like he could throw up at any moment. He had never felt butterflies like this in his life. He just hoped to himself that as the night moved on it would get easier.

“So, I was thinkin’ we could check out this jazz club down the street from the restaurant after we eat. There’s a dance floor and great music.” Warrick couldn’t wait to get Nick out on the dance floor in a club where they could be completely comfortable with one another.

“That sounds great.” Nick smiled, “I think I’ve heard of that place. Is it called Crystal Jazz?” He had heard of it from a friend of his and knew it was a gay bar.

“That’s it. I’m a regular there. You know I love my jazz. Sometimes I sit in on the piano for a few songs too.”

“Wow, I haven’t heard you play in forever. Maybe we can get you up there tonight.” He nudged Warrick playfully.

“Oh now…come on…I don’t know about tonight.” Warrick shook his head in protest, “I haven’t even touched my piano in a while…maybe next time.”

“Ok. I’ll let you off the hook tonight, but you better practice up for next time.”

Nick’s accent was as thick as ever because his emotions were heightened and it made Warrick chuckle with delight, “I’ll definitely practice for next time.”

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

They stepped inside the restaurant after leaving the car with the valet. They stood as close to each other as they could. Nick couldn’t get enough of Warrick’s smell and his heart still raced with anticipation of how the night would unfold. Could it be that he was all ready completely smitten by the tall, dark, green eyed man? Who wouldn’t be? He was sexy, seductive, confident and built like a god; all excellent qualities in a mate.

They were seated immediately and presented with menus. Nick ordered first; porterhouse, medium with fresh steamed veggies, a Caesar salad and a cold mug of beer.
Warrick duplicated his order and handed the menus back to the waiter.

They sat close together; eyes fixed on each other with cheeky little smiles until the waiter sat the bread on the table scaring both of them and breaking their focus. Each laughed and Nick rubbed his sweaty hands on his jeans anxiously before looking back up at Warrick.

“I’m sorry…I’m just…flustered.” He smiled and glanced away, but only for a brief second. “I’ve just never…” Nick paused for a moment. “I’ve never looked at you the way I’m lookin’ at you now and I’m seein’ so many things differently.” He had realized there had been many subtle hints of Warrick’s feelings that he never picked up on. Gentle, grazing touches, prolonged wrestling matches, glances that lasted so much longer than they should have. “I should’ve picked up on your…feelings. Hell, I should’ve picked up on the fact that you’re gay!”

“It’s fine.” Warrick smiled as he reached under the table and took Nick’s hand in his, “It was unfair of me not to tell you before, but I was still struggling with who I am. I didn’t have a clue how to deal with all this.” Nick began to interject and assure him it wasn’t a problem but Warrick stopped him, “But, I just feel like we can make something from this…us. I can see it in your eyes…” He leaned his elbow against the table as he moved closer to Nick surveying his lips and eyes, “you feel it too and you want this just as much as I do.” His voice had become a husky, sensual whisper and he stretched to press that last words against Nick’s ear, “Don’t you?” .

Nick stammered slightly; clearing his throat, “Y-yes…” His eyes closed almost completely as Warrick’s body heat radiated against him and it was all he could do not to fall in his arms and succumb to the strong sexual desire he had smoldering within him.

The waiter swooped in with their drinks and each of them took long sips of the cold brew and settled back in their seats. Warrick’s hand was more than welcome rested over Nick’s and he was pleased that he left it there as they continued to make small talk until their dinner arrived.

“Wow!” Nick exclaimed as he chewed his steak. “You were right. This is the best steak I think I’ve ever had.”

Warrick was pleased with his choice for dinner and showed great satisfaction on his face through a sexy smile as he offered his glass for a toast.

“Here’s to the beginning.” His green eyes sparkled with pleasure as he looked into the eyes of the man he’d craved for so long.

“The beginning…” Nick agreed as he laid down his fork and tapped his glass gently against Warrick’s. They each took a long drink before returning to their meals and within a half hour they were finished with their meal and ready for some dancing.

Warrick paid the bill after a bit of argument from Nick.

“Let me buy you dinner.” He stressed, “I asked you out…remember?” He smiled brightly and shook his head as he covered Nick’s hand when it went for the bill.

“Ok.” Nick nodded; Warrick’s touch causing his heart to beat faster. It had been several minutes since their last physical contact and he’d almost forgotten how much he liked it.

Warrick’s touch remained fresh in his mind as they left the restaurant with his hand pressed against the small of Nick’s back. He opened Nick’s car door when the valet brought it around and Nick nodded in thanks as he climbed in.

“That was delicious.” Nick dared to be brave and rested his hand against Warrick’s inner thigh all the while tingling with new nervousness at his bold action. “Thank you for dinner.”

“You’re very welcome.” Warrick smiled as he covered Nick’s hand gently with his own and drove the several blocks to the club. He was thankful the club was jam packed. It gave him yet another reason to hold Nick close. He also didn’t have to wait the long line for the club as he was a VIP.

Nick was impressed as he watched Warrick exchange handshakes with the bouncer who took down the rope and let them pass.

It was pretty loud inside, but the music was a nice change from Nick’s normal country. Warrick slipped his hand into Nick’s and pulled him through the crowd to the bar.

“What do you want to drink?” He yelled loudly against Nick’s ear as he pulled some cash out to pay for their drinks.

“I’ll just have a beer.” Nick answered with the same volume, but against Warrick’s ear.

He motioned to the bartender for two of his usual and within a few minutes they were making there way toward the back of the club. Warrick received a several hellos as they moved back to his normal spot and it made Nick a little jealous. But once they made it to their destination, all Warrick’s attention was focused on Nick. He slipped his arm around Nick’s waist keeping him close and bending down to speak into his ear. “This is the only place I can come and feel comfortable.” He wanted to open up himself to Nick because he believed Nick could help him “come out” to everyone else in his life. “Nobody here knows I’m not “out” to everyone else in my life.” Nick could hear the disappointment Warrick had for himself and tried to be encouraging.

“It’s different for everyone ‘Rick.” Nick took a long drink of the cold beer, “You’ll know when it’s time and it might be hard, but you’ll have my support no matter what. Everyone at work is way more accepting then you think.” Nick nestled against Warrick as he looked around the dance floor and began to move slightly with the beat of the music.

“I appreciate that Nicky.” He took another drink of his beer sighing as he sat it down and walked around Nick holding his hand out. “Let’s get out there!” He shouted.

Nick nodded and reached for Warrick’s hand allowing him to lead him once again, but to the dance floor this time. They started off dancing a few feet apart getting accustomed to their surroundings before slowly closing the gap between them. Warrick’s fingers snapped as his arms lay over Nick’s shoulders and their hips met as they moved together in perfect relation to the each other. Nick turned so his back was against Warrick and closed his eyes briefly as he pressed himself against Warrick’s pelvis. Warrick’s hand secured itself to Nick’s left hip and their hips moved in rhythm together with the music.

Warrick’s voice was soft and raspy as he whispered against Nick’s ear for only Nick to hear, “I like how you move…” Nick smiled over his shoulder blushing slightly hoping Warrick would only believe it to be from the heat of the room.

“You’re not so bad yourself.” He smirked returning his concentration to the movements he made in relation to Warrick.

A slow song began with the last note of the previous song and Warrick turned Nick into his arms resting his hands securely against his hips as Nick curled his hands against the back of Warrick’s neck. Warrick seduced Nick with his eyes and Nick melted in his arms laying his head against Warrick’s chest as Warrick’s hands slid to Nick’s back holding him tight.

“I didn’t imagine you’d feel this good in my arms…” Warrick spoke gently against Nick’s ear; again, only for him to hear.

Nick shook his head in agreement as he leaned back to look up into Warrick’s passion filled eyes. “Are we really gonna do this?” Nick asked still unsure if their friendship would remain in tact if being lovers didn’t work out.

“Who better to have in your arms then your best friend?” Warrick asked smiling as he traced a finger across Nick’s cheek and leaned in kissing him slowly; sliding his tongue into his mouth and curling it around Nick’s. Nick sucked gently on Warrick’s tongue as his eyes slid closed. The kiss kept going off and on throughout the remainder of the song and Nick was finally able to let go of the nervousness and enjoy every second of their dance.

As the music picked up, so did their motions and they danced through a couple of more songs before heading back to their beers and finishing them off.

“You ready to get out of here?” Warrick asked.

“Sure.” Nick yawned. He was really unaware of how tired he was, but he’d barely slept since Warrick had asked him out.

It took them a little over an hour to make it back to Nick’s house and Nick’s heart raced as he wondered how the date would end.

“You wanna come in for some coffee?” He asked before getting out of the car.

“Not tonight, but thanks for offering.” Warrick smiled and stepped from the car jogging across the back of the vehicle to open Nick’s door. “I will walk you to your door though.” He grabbed Nick’s hand and helped him out of the car. They shuffled slowly to the door hand in hand, “I had a really nice time tonight Nicky.”

“I did to. I really, really did. It was…different.” He sighed happily turning to face Warrick as they made it to the door.

“So, would you like to go out again Monday night and catch a movie? Warrick asked confidently knowing Nick was more than up for a second date.

“Definitely!” He smiled pressing his hand to Warrick’s cheek with a wink.

Warrick leaned down and kissed him softly taking another step toward him and resting one hand on the back of Nick’s head moving it around to follow the motion of the kiss. He captured Nick’s tongue in his mouth pressing his teeth against it softly before running his tongue along the underside and pushing it back into Nick’s mouth. He moaned softly pulling away and letting his hands slide slowly from Nick.

“Good night.” He whispered softly.

“Good night.” Nick smiled and turned to unlock his door certain he’d be able to sleep better tonight than he had in weeks.
