No taxation...

So is anybody else amused/annoyed at the amazing amounts of butthurt the GOP is having over giving DC the vote?

While I should know better than to go looking in Fark politics threads, the Fark Independents (TM) there are pissing me off.

Yeah, I know that it isn't in the letter of the Constitution. But we fought a fucking war over this concept

which concept is this? anonymous February 27 2009, 07:21:01 UTC
DC was never intended to be a city with a permanent population of people unaffiliated to the government. It most definitely was not every intended to be a state, nor should it be. The majority of people in DC have state affiliations elsewhere. Just for the sake of argument suppose DC was allowed statehood. So the newly formed State decides that all property in this (now) state will be taxed so as to improve the roads and increase the police and fire department. Now, how will they do this? It's within states rights to tax property in their state, but a large majority of the property belongs to the Federal Government. So the Federal government taxes all the people of the USA and part of the money goes to the upkeep of Federal Bldgs. then the new State of DC gives the Federal Government a bill for property taxes. Which ends up with all the tax papers paying the state of DC. Could really get tangled up couldn't it?

Yes. If they were voting on statehood. But they aren't. It is to get representation. And not even full representation, just a seat in the house (not the senate).
