Read this recent Economist survey on evolution. One article argues that civilization is just happily incidental to the evolution of mate-attracting behavior. Displays of intelligence and creativity, which eventually built human civilization, isn't that much different from a bird-of-paradise or peacock showing off its feathers.

i heard something about war having the same motivations too, on how wars are all just about the "male instinct of aggression" gone horribly wrong.
