this might sound wierd, but that was refreshingly different. I like the whole new approach to the characters. Also, its kind of cool to think of Mal as a raw recruit and Zoe as a knowledgable, experienced ranking officer.

sorry, too tired to say much more now... you need an apostrophe in the part about boot leather ("boot leather's too hard" - its a contraction of "leather is" so its needs an apostrophe... did that come out in english? I'm really tired...)

Now I come to think of it I'm not sure where I got the idea that Zoe was career army, but I got it from somewhere, anyway I figured she'd have been there a while already.

I love that idea that Zoe was at one point above Mal in rank. Anyways, sounds logical, cut and dry. A perfect snippet of a pre-series Mal-Zoe moment. : )
