I think of all those examples you mention Epilogue still works. For one thing it didn't actually retcon anything from Rebirth. For another we actually got a happy ending for Bruce. And the fact that it was Terry was a great touch because frankly after Return of the Joker I wasn't expecting Terry's partnership with Bruce to be permanent after what happened with Barbara, Tim and Dick. But to know that THIS time Bruce's mentoring of a new hero actually stuck for fifteen years makes the son revelation even better. And it's not as if Bruce didn't raise Terry. Terry WAS raised by loving parents and trained by Bruce. I think the revelation was also great because Terry was created with Bruce's knowledge and without sex on Bruce's part. That makes Bruce seem less like a heel and more like a real father.
Superman Returns revelation WAS kind of stupid though and Gwen Stacy having kids with Norman Osborn is just plain sick.
"Epilogue" works tremendously. All those reasons you said (and yeah, I forgot to leave out the part about Bruce and Mary not having sex, another good thing about it) PLUS the fact that "Epilogue" was Terry's story, not Bruce's. Too many times a kid will just turn into a plot device, Terry McGinnis had an entire series and a DTV to come into his own.
To defend Superman having a kid in Superman Returns, though, it is kind of poetic that Superman spent the last five years with the unfortunate revelation there really isn't anyone out there and then coming home and discovering a new family. Ehh, I'm torn on the idea.
