It's so hard to get one's head around all the deaths caused by the tsunami - the most dramatic footage is all taken from a distance to get a picture of the large scale of the damage, but you can't see PEOPLE from that far away... I'm amazed by the Japanese people though, in the footage I've seen of close-up stuff they're all so calm and collected - no screams, no running, no chaos, just people trying to do what they can to survive and help others do the same. Amazing people.
Although in the aerial shots you can see cars driving to escape the tsunami and then the tsunami washing them away - which is basically horrendous to watch.
But I am impressed with how amazingly collected and well-prepared the Japanese have been. I think they will be able to recover quicker than other countries, perhaps, because they will just work hard and work together to get things done. But I really wonder what will happen to the areas that were completely detroyed - even when they are built up again, who will want to live there...? The Japanese are superstitious about buying apartments where someone has died - I don't know how they would be about areas of such mass destruction. And of course people will probably avoid areas that are so vulnerable to that sort of disaster, now.
:( Yeah, I certainly wouldn't want to live there after something like that. That being said, many parts of Japan have been hit by plenty of earthquakes and tsunamis in the past and people have kept living there - it's just a very disaster-prone part of the world. I do worry about large parts of the planet though, considering rising sea levels and growing deserts and more frequent natural disasters. I think the lucky parts of the world like Perth are going to have to get used to taking in a LOT of refugees.
That's true - I didn't think abot that. It gives me some hope :)
Yeah, I think Perth is going to have to stop riding on that high horse and start bucking up to reality soon. And start recycling water! (for such a "drought stricken" state, we sure don;t do much to conserve water...)
I'll get you a buton badge ;)8cakeMarch 14 2011, 09:25:40 UTC
Yeah.
...Yeah.
Just. Yeah.
On an irrelevant side note, I really will read the third Immortals story soon - I haven't been because for some reason I was saving it. But I am getting withdrawls now, so..... (goodbye ShousetsuBangBang trawling). Basically, watch out for a lot of late comment spamming at some point in the not-distant future...
良かった~ I will make that promise here and now. I declare that miss narcolepticnemu is hereby excluded from any hate or ill-feelings that may result from reading the rest of her ridiculously long gay AU jrock high-fantasy Epic Saga.
