Arashi- "Boku ga Boku no Subete"

Jun 24, 2010 13:39

Another great song! This one came from Arashi's 24th single "Beautiful Days" and was used for their "Au by KDDI" CMs with the theme "If I were not in Arashi..." That the commercial matches really well with the nostalgic song lyrics is another plus.

The song is basically about someone allowing wounds of the past to heal, working hard while cherishing his present, and moving on to the future of his dreams. Please enjoy :)

:::僕が僕のすべて::: (I am my all)

If, on that day,
I had chosen a slightly different future,
I might be questioning the familiar daily scenes
that reflect off the swaying window. (1)

We all get hurt from yearning for something, and then
surely, we live on
while cherishing the one "present"
that we chose. (2)

Being my true self, I'll overcome sorrow and start walking again
on the nameless road that belongs to no-one.
Tomorrow too, I'll head towards my dreams, worry, laugh and laugh again.
The one thing that won't change is that I am my all, here and now

If only, on that day,
I was able to be honest to you without bluffing...
The feelings that suddenly fill my heart
are painful, but I now cherish them. (3)

We all accrue memories
of each meeting and each parting,
perpetually living on
for the new tomorrow.

I will embrace my life, my fate, and go on.
So that they shine, little by little,
I'll I run, run, run and run through the changing seasons.
The only thing that won't change is the road I've laid; that's definite. (4)

Yeah, If only I could accept the anxieties that came to an immature halt,
the time that passed ephemerally,
my true self...
So that I believe in myself more than I do now,
may this vow open the future,
may this thought reach you. (5)

Being my true self, I'll overcome sadness and start walking again
on the nameless road that belongs to no-one.
Tomorrow too, I'll head towards my dreams, worry, laugh and laugh again.
There's only one thing that certainly won't change

I will embrace my life, my fate, and go on.
So that they shine, little by little,
I'll I run, run, run and run through the changing seasons.
The one thing that won't change is that I am my all, here and now.

:::Notes:::

(1) The concept of the swaying window, 「揺れている窓」, or a wavering windowsill in some cases, appears in many songs and conveys doubt about the present (what you see when you look at a reflection in the window). Here, the narrator reflects on how he might be living differently if he had simply chosen another path; he believes his present is an arbitrary result of his choice.

(2) I switched the subject from "I" to "we" as the lyrics here seem to be making more of a blanket statement about people rather than just a specific instance in one person's life. This fits with the pensive tone of the music; it's as if the narrator is reflecting about his past while contemplating about how, in general, humans need to cherish the past but move on to the present.

(3) This statement fits in with the theme of someone trying to come to terms with his past. The narrator realizes that he must not wallow in self-pity and dwell on past mistakes; he must move on.

(4) The narrator was trying to contrast the constancy of the path he's chosen and his hard work in the present with the changing nature of the seasons. 春夏秋冬 is usually pronounced with on-yomi "しゅんかしゅうとう" but here it is with kun-yomi "はるなつあきふゆ," emphasizing the change of season.

(5) This was the most difficult part to translate... A friend from an online forum (japanforum.com) taught me to think of the "anxieties," "time," and "my true self" as modifiers of "accept".
