Sheep can be loud? Were they wearing bells at all? I wasn't aware of them being in any way noisy apart from those....

They go Baa. Or more realistically "meeehrr" and occasionally "mhuuuuuur" if they're the larger parent type sheep. Mehrr/Mhuuur all night long.
