A.N. I will mostly be using the name Cheryl for Heather in these stories, since she stated her intent to go back to it at the end of the game. But I didn't claim her under that name since it's technically a spoiler. All or most of these stories will be a single narrative describing the relationship of Cheryl and Douglas after the game.

This World Is With Us

When Heather opened her eyes, it was a new world, and She was a god. It was a world of peace and happiness, reward and punishment, blood and death. She alone was King and Queen, hiding herself in the Hill to destroy what She would, waiting for Her rule over the rest of the world. And She had worshippers: a starry-eyed Claudia, an angry Vincent, a fearful throng. Where Douglas lay in a pool of blood She chose not to look. She was a hideous god, an angry god, and a very lonely god.

When Cheryl opened her eyes there was sunlight in the bedroom and she could feel the sheets under her skin. She waited a few moments for reality to take over again. This was Douglas's apartment; this was her room and her new bed. Cheryl was all right and the world was back to fearing mostly itself again. When she looked at the clock she saw that it was already ten in the morning. She stumbled from the room in her pajamas.

Douglas was sitting on the couch reading the newspaper. The cast had finally been removed from his leg a few days before. "Hey," she said. "You didn't wake me up for school."

He shook his head. "Last night you told me you weren't feeling well and you didn't want to go today. Are you all right now?"

"I'm OK. But you weren't going to try to force me to go anyway?" she asked.

"You'll be eighteen in a few days, Cheryl. It's your business if you want to miss a day of school. Why, would your dad have made you go?"

"No. He trusted me not to ditch for no reason. Anyway, you're not my dad."

Douglas nodded. "And it's a good thing too."

"What so you mean by that?" Cheryl's mind cycled through several possibilities, some more insulting than others.

"I just mean that we already know how lousy I am at parenting."

Guilt hit Cheryl when he put it that way. She sat down next to him and pulled him into a hug. "I'd never say anything like that to you. I just don't need another dad, that's all."

Douglas nodded. "I understand that."

Sometimes he seemed uncomfortable when she hugged him but right now he just put his arms around her and rested his cheek against her head.

"Douglas?" she asked tentatively.

"Yeah?"

"I still have nightmares. About Silent Hill," she said quietly.

"I'm sorry to hear that," he said. "Are you sure you're OK?"

"I feel all right once I wake up, because I know it's all really over. But it's still bad when I dream about it. And that makes me feel stupid."

She thought he might let go of her but he didn't. "That's not stupid," he said. "I'd worry more if you didn't have nightmares."

"Usually it's the same one, you know? I lost, and everything is messed up forever." Cheryl decided to spare him the details, though she knew he could handle it. "And it's so cold."

She buried her face in his open shirt, smelling soap and cigarettes, and he tightened his arms around her.

"I have them too," he said.

"Really?"

"An old man's not allowed to admit he has nightmares?" he asked.

"No... just... are yours as bad as mine?"

Douglas was silent for a moment. She could feel his chest rise and fall with his breathing.

"I don't know. But you're gone, and that's bad enough."
