Literature is not merely the study of words or writing, but a review and survey of the literary works definitive of a particular time-period, its historical context and social mores. In other words, we learn more about something (a culture, a civilisation, an extended period of time where everyone is thinking the same bloody thing or not) through its written works.

Yup, I know what you mean. Its that mix + my aspiration to be a playwright, that drove me to take lit I guess! Hopefully I won't regret it...
Anyway, I picked this excerpt because I am a strong believer in writing with clarity and without all the pretentious diction. I mean there's a difference between being nuanced in your writing and just picking out vague phrases or words to include in your writing. I think you wrote in one of your entries.. something about the use of the phrase "carpe diem"? Similar idea I guess, just in the context of art appreciation and lit criticism :)That being said, I'm still trying very hard to reach that kind of level in my own writing! Still very very far...

i totally agree. and emerson is the epitome of this retardation hahaha. though i actually did quite like Self-Reliance. But The poet is bleah. it is true that some ppl like using high-flying ideals like "carpe diem" but sadly their understanding of it is either limited, or that they construe its meaning to fit his/her personal set of belief (or lack of heh).
it's almost like those fundamentalists u noe, who used religion as a tool to advance their cause.
