Extrapolating from current trends, in four or five millennia the Oscars ceremony will be more than a year long. One year’s Oscars will start before the previous year’s have finished. Nobody in America will have time for making movies anymore

Oh, of course; we know lots of people who have Super Bowl parties but have no interest whatsoever in sports. It is analogous to using New Year's (or any other insignificant event) as an excuse to have a party.

You're far more into movies than I, as are your local friends, so I can see that you'd get more out of the Oscars than I would. Actually, I like a lot of old movies, and I'd be far more likely to watch (i.e., pay attention) to a movie if it were from, say, the 1960s.
