Random Stuff XLVII

Alas, I must retire my bicycle for good, after a little over ten years and 15,402 miles of loyal service. On the way home yesterday evening, my front dérailleur cable snapped in two just where the cable meets the shift mechanism. (This has happened distressingly often over the past several years. I can still ride without shifting in front, but ( Read more... )

To be fair, I have seen bins of orange flags in such locations as Farmington, CT, and Kirkland, WA (yes, really).

Crazy-guess they aren't as rare as I thought. Kirkland? That's a surprise.

I'm sorry to hear your bike has been dérailled. I'm sure you'll find a suitable next-life for it.

Thanks-me, too. What I really need is to find a starving student who is good with tools and who wants a fixer-upper bike. A real mechanic can probably fix it up rather cheaply, as the only really expensive part is the back sprocket, and there's some possibility that it's still good. The durable parts are actually still good; a C-note's worth of raw materials will likely make it serviceable.

Aw, thanks. Likewise, I'm sure. We have some decent bike trails around here, but nothing like the Tracy Owens Station-to-Marymoor Park pastoral getaway.

Oddly enough, the first time my front dérailleur cable broke was about 200 yards after turning around at Marymoor Park on the same ride. Thirteen miles of pumping the pedals so fast that my legs became a big blur just to keep up with my companions.

My new bike is the modern incarnation of my old one-a Specialized Crossroads Elite. Have ridden it to work three times, but I'm still transferring over some of the accessories from my old bike (mainly, the lights and the speedometer).

Hi
I seem to recall that there is a good recylced bike place (the equivalent of Recycled Cycles?) in Cleveland is on the West side, just about a 1/2 mile west of the West Side Market on that main drag (Loraine?). Worth a look.

Wow, thanks! That's just what I need. Friends of ours have been bugging us to visit the West Side Market, as well.
