You know what glib admonishment I can't stand?

It's okay to drink like a fish-as long as you drink what a fish drinks! Not because I'm a heavy drinker: I tipple about as often as I'm offered a free strawberry daiquiri, about once a year on average. I object to the profound ignorance of physiology displayed here ( Read more... )

I'd started to wonder what the father thought of that horrible vehicle, but one commenter wrote that he had a Spongebob Squarepants Hummer. Bozhe moi, I'm still opposed to nuclear Armageddon, but I can no longer claim that its proponents are completely crazy in calling for the destruction of Western civilization.

Shouldn't I be the one talking about osmosis and salt concentration in fresh vs salt water fishes? But I guess I was too busy in New Orleans at the annual meeting of ichthyologists :P Be prepared for some Katrina pictures...

Heh-heh-our big meeting, for the American Society for Human Genetics (which cutiepi314 is attending, but not I, sigh), is also is New Orleans this year, in October. I really wanted to go, but I'm going to Florida for a similar meeting in November, and our department's funding isn't quite robust enough for a mere postdoc to double-dip this year. I will look forward to your pictures.

My Ph.D. research was in transmembrane transport, so I can claim some expertise in osmotic balance. I do wonder, however, how salmon manage the transition when they migrate from stream to ocean and vice versa. Probably the same way I could eat a 12-inch pizza for dinner, when I was college, and survive the salt load by drinking water almost continuously all night.
