I actually ended up liking the Bean series more than Ender's, which surprised me. I'm sure you'll love Shadow of the Hegemon and Shadow of the Giant as well. The last one even made this old ironside tear up a bit. And you're right about the comics. They gloss over so much that if you didn't already know the story you'd be confused as hell :)
