Samuel Spade's jaw was long and bony, his chin a jutting v under the more flexible v of his mouth. His nostrils curved back to make another, smaller, v. His yellow-grey eyes were horizontal. I've only seen the movie version starring Bogart. I'll look for the earlier pre-code one. Looks like it was made in 1931, ten years prior to John Huston's remake. Also, thanks for the warning about the Bette Davis version.
