Roth IRA.

Zhenya, you and your husband are considered to be expats. You've been out of the country for a while, but as US citizens you responsible for US taxes. However, majority of your US income should be excludable from US federal taxes under IRC Sec. 911.

Not only you need a specialist, you need someone who focuses on expatriate taxation.

The company we found wants $1000 fee. Just not worth it.
It's our third year doing this so we're not totally clueless about the process, but I can't get the darn TurboTax to give me CTC. I also want to kick our Edward Jones dude who recommended Roth IRA's for which we'll have to pay a penalty. Financial advisor my a**.

You can play around with TaxAct. They have free federal edition if you do it online. I usually buy download version as I like to have all the files on my computer. Fed and state usually comes up to $21 or so all together. I see that they have forms 2555 (which allows you to claim the foreign earned income exclusion) and form 1116 that gives you a chance to claim the foreign tax credit.

Anyway, my recommedation, play with online version, and decide whether it works for you or not.

BTW, i specialize in expat taxes, so you can ask me technical questions...
