Summary: Many things happen, including a Fudoumine player displaying Fuji's triple counters. Eiji confesses to Fuji.
Fuji stood by the fence of the Fudomine tennis courts, watching the practice. This brought back some fond memories, truly. Fuji listened to the sounds on the tennis courts, of boys shouting and the bounce of tennis balls. Eiji was a good coach, Fuji thought idly as he watched Eiji and his club interact.
A freshman wnet over to Eiji and whispered there was a visitor. The red headed coach turned and blinked when he saw Fuji standing at the side f teh courts. He sent teh freshman back to ball duty and moved over to stand closer to Fuji.
"If you wanted to watch Fujiko, all you had to do was ask..." Eiji teased, "Now watch the player on the back court....here it comes...."
The young man in question hit Hakugei. Eiji looked at Fuji, "What do you think?"
Fuji smiled. "I'm very impressed. I'm sure it's much better than mine, too." He eyed the court and the player in the back court, and asked, "Why that way?" It wasn't the same, but the effect was the same, anyway.
Eiji grinned, "He coudln't get it to work for him in your method....so he adapted it. He is a bit obsessed with getting all three of your triple hitters down. I am not very much help though since I couldn't never figure them out even when we were playing every day...."
"Saa ..." Fuji said, and chuckled. "I'm surprised he isn't making his own. Echizen was more creative."
Eiji nodded, his eyes not leaving the team, "However, I am afraid I have NO one up to Ochibi's standards. He is doubles two...." He called out four names and told them all to work on doubles, then looked at Fuji, "So waht brings you to FUdomine Fuji-kun?"
"Maa, my triple counters in doubles two? Oshitari-san would be offended," Fuji said with a chuckle. He let Eiji finish his instructions to his students before answering. "I was wondering if you had anything planned for later. Movie and dinner?"
Eiji chuckled and nodded, "Be careful Fuji-kun or I might think you are asking me on a date....yeah -- I have all weekend off this week so whatever you want to do sounds good...."
Fuji thought about that for a moment, niko smile in place. A date? With Eiji? He'd never thought of it that way before. He'd never thought about Eiji that way before, either. The tensai smiled again, and winked at Eiji. "Call it anything you want. Shall I wait here for you?"
Eiji nodded, "We are almost done.....in about ten minutes...." He winked over his shoulder at Fuji and moved away to help a freshman with his serve....
Ten minutes later he called an end to practice and the team headed to the locker room and eyed Fuji strangely as they wandered past. Eiji came over to Fuji and nodded, "Okay I need to head home so I can change.....did you want to share a car or just meet somewhere?"
Fuji had merely smiled serenely at the team as they walked by. Teenage boys always found that smile unnerving. They had before, and they did now, most of them walking a lot faster as they neared Fuji and almost scooted past him. He smiled at Eiji too, and just shrugged. "I don't drive, but I'll go with you if you don't mind," he said with a smile. "You can drive and I'll pay for gas."
"Sounds fine to me...." Eiji grinned and motioned for Fuji to follow him, "I just need to grab a few things out of my office and we can take off...."
He led Fuji through the halls of Fudomine to his office, grabbed his things and a stack of essays to grade and them after locking up took them to his car, "So where are you whisking me away to this evening Fuji-kun."
"The Kimura Theatre," Fuji said with a smile. "There are three different shows at seven. We'll pick one you like, and then grab a bite to eat. How does burgers sound, or would you like something else?" Fuji offered a hand to Eiji to take the test papers.
Eiji handed the papers over, unlocked teh car and tossed his stuff into the back seat. He leaned against his car and nodded, "I think that sounds fine...."
He climbed in and once Fuji was also in he started the car and turned down the radio, "What made you think of me Fuji?" He pulled out of the parking space and headed towards his condo....
Fuji shrugged, smiling. "I wanted to spend time with you." Which was true, he did. Though Fuji didn't quite understand why. Probably because he needed to patch things up with Eiji. Fuji smiled some more, and looked at Eiji, noticing for the first time how well that red hair and those blue eyes went together. Eiji was good-looking. Not in the same way Taka or Shishido was, but Eiji had something ... Eiji was a lot more settled and relaxed now, Fuji realised.
"Sounds good...." Eiji entered his condo and locked up after Fuji had entered, "Can you set the papers on the coffee table....thanks! I will only be a minute....or ten..."
~~
Eiji closed his bed room door behind him and sighed as he got ready. FIfteen minutes later he was out and standing near Fuji,"I am all ready....lead on!"
Fuji had set the papers in a neat pile on Eiji's table, weighing them down with a saucer so they wouldn't fly away. The tensai smiled at his friend. "Wow, that's nice," Fuji said, and he moved towards the door. "It's not too far. Let's take the train."
Eiji shifted in his khaki's and a blue button down and winked, "Well it isn't every day Fuji takes me out hmm?" He grabbed his wallet and keys, opened the door and followed Fuji out. He locked up amd headed down, "So do you know what three shows they are showing or no?"
Fuji laughed, and shook his head cheerfully. "I don't know," he said. "We'll be there nice and early, though, and we can decide together, ne?" Fuji paid for both tickets, and waved Eiji onto the train when it arrived.
Eiji grabbed a center pole and looked at Fuji, "I will buy the movie tickets then.....fair is fair Fuji-kun...."
"No, Eiji," Fuji said, and he smiled at Eiji warmly. "Today is my treat."
Eiji laughed and nodded, "Alright....." He began to plot how he could pay.....
Fuji knew Eiji would be thinking about paying, because Eiji never gave up without a fight. "If it means so much, Eiji, the next time can be on you," he said with a smile, and patted his friend before resting his hand on Eiji's shoulder. Oops, no touching, this isn't the US anymore, reminded Fuji's inner voice. Even as Fuji took his hand back, though, he noted how well Eiji's muscles were defined.
No more crushes on friends! his inner voice shouted, and Fuji quickly dragged his thoughts away from where they might be going.
Eiji left the train and nodded, "Fine, next date it's my turn...." He was enjoying unsettling Fuji and smiled over his shoulder, "Come on handsome brighten up so people will think I am no fun....you lead the way...." He stepped aside and deliberately took Fuji's hand and winked at him.
Fuji told himself firmly that Eiji didn't mean anything by taking Fuji's hand, but he couldn't help squeezing it. "I _am_ smiling," he laughed, pointing out his ever-present expression. "Besides, it's a movie theatre. It's dark inside."
They stood in front of the posters of the movies currently showing. A romantic comedy, horror film, and action movie. "Ne. Eiji, which one would you like to see?"
"Comedy...." he pulled Fuji to the ticket sales staff and it was one of his students, "My date is taking me out tonight Hana-chan!"
The girl laughed with Eiji and eyed Fuji, "You have good taste Kikumaru-sensei...." She took Fuji's money and gave them teh tickets, "Good choice and it's not so full tonight...."
Eiji nodded and pulled Fuji ot the snack stand, "I want a soda and gummi bears...." he never let go of Fuji's hand for long. Thinkling maybe if he over did it a bit his friend might get the picture, the one Eiji had been tring to get him to see for over a year before he left.....
Fuji smiled at Hana-chan, accepting the tickets with a word of thanks. "Perhaps he was my choice," he said, then smiled, winking, and then allowed himself to be pulled over to the snack stand, where he ordered two sodas, a big bag of gummi bears, and a large caramel popcorn. Eiji was clinging to him, and Fuji thought, in a random moment while he was paying at the till, that Eiji probably made a very cute date.
Fuji Shuusuke ... the voice warned, and Fuji blinked. Eiji's hand was warm in his, the other one holding one of the sodas. The tensai squeezed Eiji's hand, ignoring the voice. "Ne, Eiji, let's go in early. She gave us wonderful seats, so we should enjoy them as long as possible, hmm?"
Eiji smiled and nodded, following Fuji into the theatre and to their seats. Finally, once they were seated he looked and Fuji, "Okay, spill....first you look off center when I call this a date and now you are acting all normal....so either you are or you aren't....pick...."
Fuji was just thinking how cute Eiji's flippy hair looked in the theatre lighting and how long it had been since he had done something with Eiji just like this since they graduated and he left. When Eiji turned to him and confronted him with the question, it caught him off balance, and Fuji took a moment too long to respond with, "Now, now, Eiji, whatever do you mean?"
Eiji snorted, "I am so onto you Fuji....I have been reading you for YEARS." He leaned over and kissed Fuji on the lips, firmly and sweetly, "Think about THAT....I need a napkin...." He rose and left with a purposeful stride...
As Eiji walked off, Fuji raised fingers to his lips. Eiji had kissed him. But then ... since when ... surprised blue eyes followed Eiji as the redhead walked up the aisle and out the doors, and then Fuji closed them for a moment.
Eiji had kissed him.
Eiji said he had been reading Fuji for years.
Eiji had kissed him.
And Fuji wondered how long it had been. Had Fuji ever realized, ever hoped that those friendly touches and glomping were anything more than platonic? Had he assumed the Golden Pair would be there forever, and had he assumed, like everyone else, that the Golden Pair wasn't just on the courts? Had that blinded him to the real story? What had been the real story? Fuji waited for Eiji to come back, wondering what to do, what to say, now that Eiji had told him what he felt. And how did Fuji feel?
Eiji re-entered the theater and sat back down and shot Fuji a look out of the corner of his eye, then turned, "Well? My kiss is that out of practice hmmm? Guess it serves me right for thinking you might not mind....." he turned to face the screen with a sad little sigh.
Fuji reached out with one hand to Eiji's shoulder, pulling his friend back towards him. "Eiji ... since when? Why didn't you ever tell me?"
"Since junior high, you were busy mooning over Taka and a few others. It was safer to let everyone think Oishi and I werre more than friends...."
"I wasn't mooning over Taka, or anyone else ... oh Eiji, you should have said something. All those years ..."
The red head blinked, "You were....and I knew it. I KNOW you Shuusuke.....I know you better than you think...."
Fuji looked away. "If you really knew me, you probably already know I'm mercurial and flighty and don't know myself." So why do you care?
"I am hoping that once you stay PUT for awhile, you will find you....like I did. Come HOME Fujiko.....come home and let's see where there is to this kissing thing...."
Fuji looked back, and Eiji's blue eyes looked serious. "Eiji ..." Fuji was unable to look away. He'd never thought of Eiji that way because Eiji had always been his best friend and had always been, he assumed, unavailable. Learning now that Eiji was indeed single, had been all the time, and had always been waiting for Fuji ... he'd waited ten years.
What, indeed, had Fuji been looking for? He'd always wondered if he had missed something ... something had always been nagging in the back of his mind. Crushes came and went ... but Fuji had never had a crush on Eiji, had never allowed himself to ruin that friendship. Was it because he had feared the loss of this friendship the most, that he had been so afraid for it that he never dared allow his mind to think otherwise?
Looking at Eiji's sad face, Fuji wanted to hug his friend, to help Eiji be happy again. And Eiji ... he'd been waiting ten years. Could Fuji help Eiji ... and in so doing, help himself? Maybe with Eiji the loneliness would go away. And his old friend was looking at him, expectantly, waiting for Fuji to say something.
Was it worth the heartache pining after people who didn't care for him in the same way he cared for them? Should he start with someone who was looking for someone like him? Fuji had never thought about Eiji in this way ... but could he? Couldn't he?
Looking at Eiji's expectant face, Fuji couldn't bear to disappoint his newly-regained friend. He knew what he would say now. "Thank you for waiting for me, Eiji," Fuji said. Having made up his mind, with a smile, he kissed Eiji's lips.
Eiji blinked and nodded with a smile, "About time you got with the program Fujiko.....I didn't want to wait another ten years....and people call you a tensai."
Fuji chuckled. "Never said it worked for humans, did I?" he said with a smile. Could this work ... with Eiji?
Eiji just linked their fingers and settled in for the show, he rested his head on Fuji's shoulder and chuckled through the movie....
