Upon being horrified by how much French I've forgotten (my mom was a native speaker but she's been gone a while now), I'm trying to include more French-language books into my reading list. I would love to read a whole bunch by POC authors, but I'm not sure where to start looking ( Read more... )

I've been meaning to ask this question myself!

The French are really big on graphic novels so you shouldn't have too much of a problem finding some to read (although how much success you`ll have finding graphic novels by poc I cannot say. There's a lot of translate Manga though, if you`re into that). I actually read the entire Sailor Moon series in French, but unfortunately they've gone out of print and are really expensive to buy. If you can get your hands on them they`re pretty good reads.

Thoroughly recommend Alexandre Dumas. His writing is very plotty and long, but he uses quite simple words and has a very engaging style so I (a non-native French speaker) found it fairly easy to read.

Le Comte de Monte Cristo par Alexandre Dumas
Les Trois Mousequetaires par Alexandre Dumas
La Dame aux Camélias par Alexandre Dumas fils
Persepolis par Marjane Satrapi

Thanks, I hadn't even thought of Dumas. I asked a friend of mine who's really into BD, and he also suggested Persepolis, as well as Aya de Yopougon which looks really interesting.

For what it's worth I loved the 1st 2 books in the Aya series of graphic novels, which I read in English. In the US they were published as 3 books: Aya, Aya of Yop City, and Aya: The Secrets Come Out. The 3rd one doesn't live up to the 1st two, as it gets overwhelmed by the many plotlines for minor characters we've met along the way, but is well-worth reading to get the end of the stories!
