I love it too! I read about 4 different translations of it and wrote a MUD area of the Battle of Kurukshetra. The coolest translation was by a guy named Von Buitenen who sadly died before finishing...

There's a pretty good TV miniseries from 1989 you might check out, good to watch right after you've read it.

Also Prakash Jha's recent film, "Raajneeti," purports to be a modernized retelling of (some part of?) the Mahabharata set in Indian politics with a generous admixture of the Godfather movies.... a fairly gripping movie even if the Mahabharata parallels are not all that.
