Oh I totally get what you mean about predestination in 'The Stand' - I find the pre-destination vs free will debate quite an interesting one.

It's clear that King's Christianity is a quite conservative one.

I would agree 'The Road' stays with you. It has staid with me.

Oh, thank goodness. I thought I was the only person in the world who didn't like The Road.

I did too! I finally just gave up on it (hiatus officially, but indefinitely) because I was so boooored and had no idea what everyone else saw in it. So this post gave me a lot of relief

It can be so difficult to hold an opinion different to others. Most of the people at our book club - where this was a selection - didn't like it very much.

One chap adored it and it was really him and me in a head-to-head over its good points and bad points.

This chap so hated Pullman's 'His Dark Materials' series so I didn't really mind taking a stand against him over this as he was so very vocal at previous meetings.

I'm glad to find I am not alone as well!

Can you point me to that entry of yours? I am interested in reading how people responded in terms of seeing it as hopeful.

My husband is very keen on 'end of the world' documentaries so in that respect I have a good appreciation of how badly things can get in certain circumstances. I'd like to think people would at least try to work together. Mccarthy's vision was so bleak and yet it did stay with me.

This is going to sound so snobby, but I tried to read "The Road" and had to stop because I couldn't stand all of the fragments. I know it's a stylistic choice, but god, it bothered me. : / You have a very interesting take on it.
