I was discussing best/worst books with someone on my personal FL, and we got to talking about books we'd been forced to read in school (either HS or college) that we wound up HATING...either because of the "forced to read" aspect in and of itself, or possibly because the book was inappropriate for the age we were when we read it (and were thus unable to appreciate the themes or historical context that made it an "important work").
Some of the books I often see mentioned that fall into this "OMG, THAT BOOK SUCKED!!" category are Thomas Hardy's Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Nathanial Hawthorne's The Scarlet Letter, but I'm sure that there are many, many others.
So, here's the basis of the challenge: Sometime in the month of July, try to revisit a book that you read in the past that you absolutely loathed, preferably one that was assigned to you for some class or another. The goal is to see if a little time, perspective and experience can give you a new outlook on a piece of literature that you wrote off as horrid. Try to keep an open mind as you start your re-reading...see if you figure out why the book was assigned to you, what your instructor wanted you to get out of it, why it's considered noteworthy.
What do you guys think....anyone interested?
