11: Pillars of the Earth - Ken Follett

I must be among a vast minority who did not thoroughly enjoy this book. The story was not as compelling as it could have been because the characters are mostly type - cast. While the historical perspective was interesting and insights into the monastery life were believable, much of the sub plots seemed over the top. Violence for the sake ( Read more... )

I had a hard time getting into this one but once I did, I enjoyed the story. But yeah, it was a bit long for the payoff. I had 3 or 4 different people tell me when they saw me reading it, that it was one of the best books they'd ever read.

It took me a while too and my interest waxed and waned throughout. By the end I just wanted it to be over.

I don't think you missed the point. Ken Follett's an extremely mediocre writer.

This was the first book of his I have read, obviously I won't be reading any more of his stuff.
