It was okay. I didn't like it as much as her stories about girls and court life. She seems to write women much better than men - I never got the sense that she really "knew" John Tradescent, or knew quite what to say about him. She went on for pages and pages about the politics and wars of the time period. This was necessary background for the story, and was interesting enough, but it felt like she kind of abandoned the characters during those sections. I don't know if you've read her Wideacre trilogy yet, but I'd recommend those. They're also about farming and gardening, and the characters' relationship with the land.
